Earlville mayor resigns after arrest for grand larceny
EARLVILLE – Earlville Mayor Toni Campbell’s resignation was read Monday night before the largest number of media ever present at a board meeting in this village of less than 800 residents.
Campbell, of 21 Greene St., allegedly stole more than $42,000 from Chenango Valley Pet Foods of nearby Sherburne where she was finance manager. She was charged with grand larceny and falsifying business records on July 2.
About 20 residents and 10 media representatives packed the village hall to hear a one-sentence statement read in public session. Campbell was not present. The letter, which was dated July 11, was delivered by village Attorney William H. Getman.
Earlville Village Clerk Christian Vischi said the board went into executive session to receive the former mayor’s letter from Getman. Vischi verified Campbell’s signature and then, out of executive session, it was read aloud. The Earlville Board of Trustees voted 4-0 to accept the resignation.
The board also voted 4-0 to appoint Trustee and Deputy Mayor Mark Doeberl to complete the vacant term through May 31, 2011.
According to Doeberl, who has been in office for four and a half years, all village accounts have been reconciled.
“It appears at this point that there was no wrongdoing of the village’s finances,” he said. Doeberl added that last night’s proceedings “went as well as could be expected” despite the large turnout.
“It’s unfortunate,” he said of Campbell’s arrest, “but it happened. The village needs to go on.”
Letters of interest and intent from any resident wishing to fulfill Doeberl’s trustee term through March 31, 2012 will be accepted until Friday, July 23. The board of trustees could make an appointment as early as July 26.
Vischi said he had not talked to his former boss since her arrest.
