Police: New Berlin woman came home to a burglar stealing clothes

NEW BERLIN – The Town of New Berlin Police arrested an Albany man Wednesday after apprehending him in the middle of an alleged burglary. They say he was discovered hiding in the female homeowner’s bed.

New Berlin Cpl. Robert Jones said police believe the defendant, 31-year-old Shane S. Tulsi, had no prior relationship with the woman and called the incident a case of a “stranger on stranger” crime.

“The defendant may have been in the area as the woman was leaving her home and saw an opportunity,” he said.

Tulsi was arraigned in Town of New Berlin Court without an attorney and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf by Justice Joseph Brillinger, who later assigned the Chenango County Public Defender’s Office as his legal counsel.

Assistant Public Defender Kayphet Mavady confirmed Thursday he was recently assigned the case, but declined to make any comments since he had not yet spoken with his client. Mavady said a tentative felony hearing for Tulsi was scheduled in Town of New Berlin Court for Monday.
