Candidates for political office file petitions today
NORWICH – John Orzel, a Democrat from Whitney Point, used the steps of New York State’s oldest operating courthouse – the Chenango County Courthouse – to announce his candidacy for the New York 52nd Senatorial District this morning.
The district, which spans from Waverly to Norwich, has been represented by Republican Sen. Thomas W. Libous for the past 22 years. Orzel, who is 65, said he would make “an honest attempt” to corral the state’s spending and borrowing. The Triangle Town Board councilman and former teacher said he would also back the appointment of a nonpartisan, independent commission to redistrict the entire state.
The Chenango County Board of Elections announced that Sara L. Paddock, 31, took out a petition to run for the office of supervisor in the Town of Columbus.
The substitute teacher and mother of three is a member of the Independence Party. She said she was looking for a challenge and hoped to bring a youthful perspective to town government. Paddock would fill a vacancy left by former Columbus Supervisor George C. Coates, who stepped away from the post in January.
A 1997 graduate of Unadilla Valley Central School, Paddock is currently studying medical billing and coding at Everest University.
Town of Sherburne Supervisor William C. Craine, a Republican, officially filed his completed petition to be on the ballot for Chenango County Treasurer and, in the Town of Bainbridge, Randall W. Lambrecht filed one for town justice and James A. Maddalone for town council.
Republican Commissioner Harriet Jenkins said some Republican and Democratic Committee candidates had also filed petitions. There are 42 districts in Chenango County and two committee positions per party in each.
Candidates for office have until 5 p.m. today to turn in their completed petitions and get on the ballot for the November elections.
