DVD Patrol
What’s happening, Patrollers! The DVD Patrol is on extra Summer duty this week and we’ve got some reviews for you. The busy one, the Toddster, has been making the rounds catching a lot of movies here and there. A special thanks to the staff and management at the Hamilton Theater before we get going. More news on some upcoming things for the patrol which we’ll tell you about later. Let’s see what there is!
Shrek Forever After - You can’t keep the Green Guy down. Shrek is back in action for his final adventure as he reunites with all the gang. Shrek (Mike Myers) has become a family man and longs for the good old days when being an ogre meant scaring the townspeople and all that good stuff that made being an ogre worth living. An evil little troll named Rumplestilskin becomes aware of Shrek’s problem and offers him one day to do what he wants. All he has to do is sign on the dotted line. Be careful before signing anything. Shrek signs it and he thinks he has gotten his day. Little does he know that the day he has actually given up is the day he met Fiona (Cameron Diaz). Even his pal Donkey (Eddie Murphy) doesn’t know him. Will Shrek find a way to set things right?
The Toddster’s Take - Not a bad movie. As sequels go, it was better than 2 or 3. There wasn’t much to the story at all really. Myers, Diaz, and Murphy all play their parts so well. They can’t help it if there wasn’t much to work with. Thinking this will be the last one, it’s probably time to wrap it up.
The Karate Kid - Moving somewhere new is never easy. Just ask Dre Parker (Jaden Smith). Dre’s Mother (Taraji B. Henson) has gotten a new job in Beijing and now they both have to move there. Dre has to make a whole new go of it including starting over at a new school and he meets Mei-Ying (Han Wen Wen). Too bad that Dre also catches the interest of Cheng (Zhao Yi) and he becomes the target of Cheng and his friends. Dre tries to steer clear of them but doesn’t have much luck. The new kid also catches the attention of Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) who teaches Dre what he knows and now the only way to prove himself is to fight in the tournament or Dre won’t ever be safe. Can Dre. with Mr. Han’s help, beat the odds?
The Toddster’s Take - This really was a great movie. Of course, there are a lot of similarities between the original (with Ralph Macchio) and this one. That’s all right because this one really appeals to a lot of people. Smith really did a great job and Chan proves he can do more than fight as he brings a real kind of tenderness to his performance. The action scenes are great and Smith is really a chip off the old block with his father Will Smith who produced the movie. Worth your time!
The A Team - If you need help, these are the guys to call. We join Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson) as he meets the guys who will become his team B.A Baracus (Quentin “Rampage” Jackson), Templeton “Face” Peck (Bradley Cooper), and H.M Murdock (Sharlito Coopely). They meet in Mexico during a rescue mission and all come together to make it back alive. Some time later, they are all stationed in Iraq together to rob a money shipment that’s backed by CIA Chief Lynch (Patrick Wilson). After completing the mission, the team is jailed and all records on their assignment have been destroyed. Now the only way they can prove their innocence is to find Lynch and see where the money went. They also have to stay ahead of Captain Sosa (Jessica Biel) who’s hot on their trail. Can the A Team get the bad guys?
The Toddster’s Take - I loved this movie! Not only did it have the spirit of the TV show but the story was great and the action was nonstop. Neeson was absolutely great, Jackson is someone you don’t mess with, Cooper was charming, and Coopely was extremely funny. Even Stephen J. Cannell was involved with this and they made this right. Biel is also proving that she can hold her own with them. Can’t wait for the sequel.
Jonah Hex - Never judge a book by its cover! With that being said, this guy might prove to be the exception to the rule. Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) fought on the side of the South during the Civil War. War has a way of taking a toll on a man. He had had enough when his former commanding officer Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich) wanted to destroy a hospital and Hex turned him in. Turnbull didn’t take kindly to that so he found Hex only to scar him and kill his family. Years later, Hex has become a scarred Bounty Hunter and has a knack for talking to the dead. Turnbull has returned and has plans to take down Washington D.C. With Leila (Megan Fox) by his side, can Hex follow the trail to stop Turnbull in time?
The Toddster’s Take - I’ve never been a fan of westerns. I am a fan of comic books. Based on the comic, the movie is very faithful to the spirit of the book and Brolin really did a good job. Malkovich is always a great bad guy and the story really along well. Fox is pretty good for a sidekick. If you like westerns, this should appeal to you.
Knight and Day - What would you do if you met a secret agent? June (Cameron Diaz) gets to do that very thing when she runs into Roy Miller (Tom Cruise). Roy uses some of his spy skills to get June to get on his plane and now it becomes a race against time to prove he’s not a rogue agent and protect the inventor of a new type of battery. Roy and June are chased from one corner of the globe to the other. Roy even tries to charm June at the same time. Is Roy going to keep June safe and stop the people who want to do him harm?
The Toddster’s Take - Definitely a fun movie. I like to call this one the courtship of Mr. and Mrs Smith. Diaz is always good and Cruise was actually something in this movie you wouldn’t expect- funny. He has a dry sense of humor but it works for him. The pace of the story was great and the action was just right. Can’t wait for the DVD.
There we go, Patrollers! I encourage everyone to see all the movies written about here and see what you think. Our Clint Eastwood special is on the way with a lot of good DVDs including a certain Greek god in action. See you soon, Patrollers. The Toddster returns next week.
