Relay for Life steps off tonight

NORWICH – Over 750 family members, friends, co-workers, county residents and cancer survivors will gather this weekend for the 14th Annual Chenango Relay For Life, in remembrance of those who’ve been lost, in celebration of those who’ve survived and in support of those who continue to battle cancer.
The annual American Cancer Society fundraiser, held in numerous communities throughout the country, has raised over $100,000 locally toward cancer research and awareness in the last few years, according to Chenango Relay For Life Event Chair Marie DeSarro, who reported a goal of $150,000 this year.
“It seems like, anymore, everyone is touched by cancer in one way or another,” stated DeSarro. “Whether it be a survivor talking about their treatments and numerous doctors appointments or a caregiver who watched their loved one go through the treatments, the pain and suffering, or in the worst case, seeing a loved one battle and pass from the disease.”
DeSarro said it’s even more difficult in a small community like Chenango, due to the fact there are “even more connections to one another,” which led the Chenango Relay For Life committee to a decision to hold a special dedication during the opening ceremony and luminary ceremony, at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. respectively, honoring “someone from the community who we’ve lost.”
A short reading dedicated to the individual will be delivered at each ceremony, and DeSarro said the hope is to “put a personal touch on our event” and to honor all the people “who were loved and are now very much missed by family, friends and community members.”
It’s all about finding the “emotion behind the dollars,” she added.
DeSarro also wished to remind Relay For Lifers of the American Cancer Society’s historic third Cancer Prevention Study (CPS-3), to be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, which invites men and women between 30 and 65 years of age, with no history of cancer, to help researchers to better identify the lifestyle, environment and genetic factors which cause or prevent cancer, according to relayforlife.org.
A wide variety of entertainment and activities will be held throughout the evening and early morning hours, according to DeSarro, including performances by soloist and vocalist Jessica Sheldon, who will also perform with her band Thistle Dew, classic rock band Bad Influence, harpist Ted Davenport, bagpiper Steven Cady and DJs Todd Cole and Ryan Revoir.
Activities will include a children’s scavenger hunt, crafts, trivia, games, dances and dance lessons, movies, yoga, relay races, tug-o-war, musical chairs, a body combat class, bingo and more.
“It’s such a positive event and such an important event,” said Norwich Pharmaceuticals President Chris Calhoun, who said Relay For Life has been one of the company’s primary community focuses since it began participating in 2001. “It’s a sober event, but it’s also a real celebration. It’s very emotional and uplifting, another reason our employees get personally involved.”
Like many local organizations and businesses, Norwich Pharmaceuticals not only contributes as a company, employees seek to raise funds throughout the year and they routinely participate at the actual event, which challenges teams to keep at least one member walking the track at the Chenango County Fairground for the entire 15 plus hours of Relay, symbolizing the American Cancer Society’s adage that “cancer never sleeps.”
“Raising money towards research, and patient and family programs, is a way for participants to feel like they’re helping, even in the smallest way,” said DeSarro. “We can’t cure cancer, but we can help find the cure. And knowing that there is work being done by the American Cancer Society to find a cure keeps giving people more and more hope that no one will ever have to go through what others in the past have gone through.”
Survivors are another aspect of that hope, according to DeSarro, who added that “every year we see more and more survivors” coming out for the event and “that proves to me we’re making a difference.”
The Chenango Relay For Life will take place from 6:30 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. Registration will be held from 3 to 6 and 7 to 9 p.m., also on Friday. For more information visit relayforlife.org or contact DeSarro at 316-0763.
