Mt. Upton man killed in Sidney accident
SIDNEY – A man avoiding the New York State Police lost control of his car during a pursuit and caused a serious accident in the Town of Sidney which claimed the life of the fleeing driver.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed that at about 3:35 p.m. Friday, Robin W. Straley, 27, of Mt. Upton, was killed after the 1993 champagne colored Toyota he was driving east on County Route 23 at a high rate of speed, spun sideways and crossed into the westbound lane.
Officers said he then struck the front of a 2006 Buick being operated by Sarah A. Mott, 66 of Bainbridge.
Mr. Straley was pronounced deceased at the scene by Delaware County Coroner Dr. Richard Ucci. A passenger in Mr. Straley’s vehicle, Samantha M. Decutler, 20, of Sidney, was airlifted via Lifenet helicopter to Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City, where she is listed in serious condition.
Mott was transported to Wilson Hospital by ambulance, where she was treated and released. The Sidney Police Department and Sidney Fire and Ambulance assisted at scene.
Police said the incident began after an officer of the Sidney Police Department was on patrol on East Main Street in the Village of Sidney.
At the time, the officer observed a Straley’s Toyota make an unsafe turn at the intersection, traveling away from the patrol car at a high rate of speed and then turning onto Chestnut Street. The vehicle was then observed traveling the wrong way down a one-way street.
Police attempted to cut off the car by driving ahead to Chestnut Street but were unable to locate the car.
The officer then activated his patrol car’s emergency lighting and proceeded down Chestnut Street. Upon reaching East Main Street, the officer observed vehicles pulled to the side of the road with passersby indicating Mr. Straley’s vehicle had driven east on East Main Street.
Upon driving up East Main Street, the officer observed other motorists and passersby indicating the vehicle had continued to travel east on CR-23. Upon proceeding onto CR-23, the police officer observed an accident involving the Straley’s and Mott’s vehicles.
The investigation is continuing.
