Family homeless after weekend fire

NORTH NORWICH – A fire consumed the home of a Plymouth volunteer fireman late Saturday night, injuring two young children and destroying all of the family’s belongings.
Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo said crews responded to a 911 call of a fire in progress with the home’s occupants trapped inside.
“The four men at the station immediately jumped into the ambulance and left for the scene,” said Chawgo.
The call came in at about midnight on Saturday at a single-wide trailer located inside the Valley View Trailer Park in the Town of North Norwich.
When the Norwich EMS Ambulance arrived, rescuers found the family standing outside of the building, but their home was completely engulfed in flames.
The trailer was home to Plymouth firefighter Norman Hebert, his wife and four children. With the exception of one daughter, they were all asleep when the fire began.
An 8-year-old boy was taken by Cooperstown Medical Transport to the SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse with minor burns and smoke inhalation. Another child was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital with minor smoke inhalation, said Chawgo.
Chawgo said the family lost a number of pets in the fire.
First Assistant Chief Shawn Cushman said the department was organizing a relief effort to aid the homeless family. Chawgo said they are currently staying with area relatives in Norwich.
“What we’re doing is taking food and clothing donations for the family members. They lost all their belongings in the fire except for the clothes on their backs and I’m not even sure if they have that much,” said Cushman.
Cushman said anyone wishing to make a donation should contact the Plymouth Fire Dept. Wednesday or Thursday between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Donors can call the department at 334-6805 during those times to speak to a firefighter or contributions can be dropped off at the station. The department is accepting donations of cash, food, clothing, blankets and other similar items, explained Cushman.
The North Norwich Fire Department, Chenango County Fire Coordinator’s Office and the Chenango County Bureau of Fire’s Cause and Origin Team also responded to the fire and an investigation is continuing.
Firemen arriving at the scene heard no fire alarms going off in the home and none were recovered in the debris, said Chawgo.
Chawgo said inspectors suspected an electrical cause, but explained the investigation was not yet finished.
