Coventry hosts 4th Annual Blueberry Festival Saturday
COVENTRY – What can festival-goers expect to find in Coventry this weekend? Blueberries, blueberries and more blueberries, according to organizers of the town’s 4th Annual Blueberry Festival.
The event, sponsored by the Coventry Community Events Committee, will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday at the community park behind Coventry Town Hall at 1839 State Hwy 235.
According to Joyce Besemer, the day-long festival will kick off with a flag raising and opening ceremony at the Town Park, immediately followed by a blueberry pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Coventry Fire Station. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the First Congregational Church of Coventryville, where Besemer serves as pastor.
The Coventryville resident and her husband, Doug, have helped plan the now-annual event for the last four years. During that time, the Blueberry Festival has grown by leaps and bounds. And with it, the number of blueberries required to make it a success.
Besemer said that last year they sold out of the 400 quarts of berries picked for the occasion. So this year, volunteers are spending even more time in the fields, gathering the local, organically grown blueberries which are the focus of the event.
Vendors and crafters will begin arriving around 8 a.m., and by 10 a.m., activities in the park will be in full swing, according to Besemer. No admission will be charged for the family-friendly event, which will live music, a strongman contest, wheelbarrow races, a pie eating contest, numerous children’s activities and more throughout the day. In addition, the Coventry Methodist Church will host an ice cream social and bake sale. The Coventry Museum Association will hold both a rummage sale and, at noon, a chicken and Western-style rib barbecue.
According to Besemer, some vendor space is still available. Those interested in displaying their wares at the event should contact her at 639-1841.
