Over time costs skyrocket at jail

NORWICH – More corrections officers are working overtime at the Chenango County Jail on Upper Ravine Road due to multiple personnel issues and inmates who require more supervision.
Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting said work service projects in the community would be curtailed as a result.
Cutting has requested permission to transfer $75,000 from the part-time line item in his budget for a “temporary fix” to over-time. He began the year with $225,000 in overtime.
Medical problems, serious illness and drug and alcohol abuse mean some convicts require 24 hour supervision in their cells. Transporting inmates to and from the hospital to treat their various medical problems is doubling housing costs this year as well.
“It’s costing us a lot of money, but they are committing such serious crimes that mean we can’t release them,” Cutting told county supervisors during a meeting of the Safety and Rules Committee this month.
Retirements, illnesses, and even deaths have plagued the jail’s workforce at the same time.
