AIM Fitness hosts 2nd Annual Family Fitness Day for Charity

NORWICH – This Saturday, Aim Fitness welcomes the community and a number of health organizations to its facility in the North Plaza for a day of charity, athletic events, wellness education and family fun.
Aim Fitness marks what it hopes will become a yearly tradition for the business, the second annual Family Fitness Day, said owner Eric Montalvo.
“Basically, we just wanted to become a community-oriented business. We’ve planned for a lot of neat stuff to take place and all the generated funds from the day goes to two really great organizations, Catholic Charities and the SPCA,” Montalvo said.
Family Fitness Day will collect money through fees paid by participants taking part in one of the three main events with all proceeds divided evenly between the Catholic Charities’ Roots and Wings program and the Chenango County SPCA. Aim staff members have also sold T-shirts and solicited local businesses to sponsor an event or a competing team.
From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aim will hold Family Fitness Day in front of or inside the business located at 6142 State Highway 12 in Norwich. Last year the event took place at Weiler Park, but organizers moved it to the business’ location after growing beyond the park’s capacity in the first year.
Throughout the day, the gym will host activities including a 22.4 mile bike tour, a 5K run / walk, and a Boot Camp launch class.
The bike tour will begin at 8:30 a.m. At 9:45, the run / walk will begin. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female participants, and the first place winners will receive a new pair of sneakers, courtesy of McLauglin’s and New Balance. At 10:45, the Boot Camp launch class will, literally, kick off.
Adults can register for any of the three activities at a cost of $15 each, $28 for two or $40 for all three. Participants may also register the day of the event for an additional $3. T-shirts will be available to those registrants on a first come, first serve basis.
Health celebrity, Trent Patterson, from season four of the hit series Biggest Loser on NBC will be speaking at Aim Fitness at 9 a.m. and will remain on site throughout the day interacting with local event patrons. Montalvo said he met Patterson, who is an Elmira area native, through a health convention at the Raymond Corp. in Greene.
“He successfully operates his own personal training program in the Elmira area and said he’d love to visit us for Family Fitness Day,” Montalvo said.
In addition to the main events, Aim will also be hosting a tug of war competition. Individuals or teams of 15 people can sign up for the contest at a cost of $5 each.
“This isn’t just a day for the people participating in the main events, we invite the whole community to come visit us,” Montalvo said. “There are a number of free physical activities all day long for the kids, the gym will be free, open to close, for anyone who’d like to come in and just work out. One of the best things going on during the event is the number of other organizations that’ll be here ready to educate people on their health.”
Montalvo said one of those groups was United Health Services out of Johnson City. He said the group would provide health related information and put on a child puppet show about dietary education for kids.
Other activities for kids include a bounce house, kickball games, an obstacle course, face painting, bubble blowing, a hula hoop competition, Simon Says, and a kids’ K run.
In addition, a chicken barbecue will be held at 12:30, and at noon an auction will begin and a DJ will be on hand to provide entertainment throughout the day.
The auction will include gift baskets, an adult evening out package, which includes dinner, wine, and an overnight stay at a local hotel. Aim is also donating memberships, gift cards, and other local businesses are providing other products for the auction. “There areprobably close to 20 significant items we’ll be auctioning off at noon,” said Montalvo.
Major sponsors of this year’s event include NBT Bank, McLaughlin’s, Burrell’s, Brown’s Pharmacy, Peggy Parker Real Estate, Pennysaver, NYCM Insurance, Preferred Mutual Insurance, Chobani Yogurt, Vitamin Water Zero, Norwich Pharmaceuticals, WCDO FM 101, DJ Do It, and Vitanza, Distefano, & Dean LLP.
