Sherburne business receives minor damage after fire

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Fire Department and four others responded to a fire at Purdy & Sons Food Inc. Thursday morning after a 911 caller reported that a room was on fire and spreading to other parts of the building.
Soon after arriving at the scene, along Shawler Brook Road, Fire Chief Patrick Lawrence said crews doused the small fire and called off mutual aid.
An employee at the scene reported that a fire began in the small meat processing plant’s smoke room after some grease caught fire. He said employees saw flames flaring up and threatening to extend from the room’s doorway, so they closed it and locked the fire inside.
“Damage from the fire appears to be somewhat minimal; it was contained to the smoke room,” said Lawrence. “We responded to a similar call at this location a few months ago,” he said.
Patrick said no one was injured. The Smyrna, Earlville, New Berlin and North Norwich Fire Departments were also responding.
