DVD Patrol
Let’s go on the trip, Patrollers! The DVD Patrol is back on the voyage to find some good picks for the week and find a few things along the way. The guy at the head of the pack, the Toddster, is once more on point and has found some options during the hot summer season where we might need a break to cool off or one to take care of the weary traveler. Here you are!
New on DVD
Date Night - It’s always a good idea to break out of your old routine once in a while. Someone forgot to tell that to Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey). Phil knows that he loves Claire a lot but their everyday life is becoming a bit boring and it needs to be spiced up a bit. He decides to take her out to dinner during a week night which is something not ordinarily done. They try to get into the most expensive restaurant in town but can’t get in until they hijack another couples’ reservation who didn’t show up. Might not be the best idea when some crooked cops mistake Phil and Claire for some suspects who may have some incriminating evidence on them. It becomes a race through the city as our favorite couple try to find out what is going on while staying ahead of the bad cops. Will this night be their last date? Carell can currently be seen in “Dinner with Schmucks” now in theaters and Fey can be seen on Thursdays on “30 Rock” when the new season starts up in September.
Death at A Funeral - Sometimes you can find something funny during a sad time. Aaron (Chris Rock), Ryan (Martin Lawrence), and Norman (Tracy Morgan) haven’t gotten together in a long time and after a death in the family brings them back, the craziness sets in. Aaron finds out just what their family member has been doing leading up to his passing, Ryan finds out what he’s been missing since he’s been gone, and Norman has to find a way to get everyone into the funeral to get everything done on time. Can they get it right? The Toddster has raided the Patrol Vaults for some good DVDs with Chris Rock that include “Head of State,” and “The Longest Yard,” and also stars with Adam Sandler in “Grown-Ups” now in theaters.

The Ghost Writer - It can be pretty hard being a writer sometimes. Just ask some of my colleagues or even the Toddster himself. Researching something to write can be especially hard. Ask the “Ghost” (Ewan Mcgregor). “The Ghost” happens to be one of the best writers in the business and he gets picked to write the memoirs of Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan) and he is also the British Prime Minister. Our hero always has a fascinating sense of curiosity and he wonders why he was picked for the assignment and he may find out when a former British Cabinet minister has accused Lang of war crimes. Digging into the material on the official, the Ghost may have gotten more than he bargained for. Is his life going to be on the line the more he investigates? Brosnan once played James Bond on four great movies now on DVD including “Goldeneye,” “The World is Not Enough,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” and “Die Another Day.”
Diary of A Wimpy Kid - Looking back on life in school is never easy. (The Toddster knows since he just survived his class reunion) Based on the best selling book, Greg Heffley (Zach Gordon) has just started middle school and gets his first taste of dealing with kids a tad bigger than him. Greg has to get a bit creative dealing with all this fun stuff like talking to girls, friends with some unique stuff that they can call their own, and trying not to get stuffed in lockers. Will he be able to outsmart them all? Another fun kids movie this Summer is “Despicable Me” where the World’s Greatest Villain tries to steal the Moon while adopting a new family at the same time.
Beyond Sherwood Forest - Our favorite heroes always have untold stories and this one is a great one. Robin Hood (Robin Dunne) has always made it point to rob from the rich and give to the poor. It really makes him a thorn in side of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Julian Sands) and also makes him an admirer in the form of Maid Marian (Erica Durance). The sheriff might have a new plan to finally get rid of Robin when he finds a monstrous Dragon that has wondered from another dimension. The dragon is sent to kill Robin and the people in the village. Is Robin going to find where the Dragon comes from and find a way to stop it before it goes after Maid Marian? Dunne can be seen on “Sanctuary” coming in the Fall on the Syfy Channel and Durance will be back with Tom Welling in the tenth and final season of “Smallville” in September on the CW Network.
We’ve pulled into the port for another week. I’m happy to say that I went to my 20-year class reunion with some of my old classmates and it was a blast seeing a lot of old friends. Where does the time go? A lot of good stuff coming up in the next few weeks including some Special TV columns with a Toddster Team-up with a TV theme as well. Talk to you next week!
