EOH presents The Sorcerer this weekend
EARLVILLE – The Earlville Opera House welcomes Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Sorcerer” for an EOH Benefit on Friday or Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., or Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. “The Sorcerer” is a merry story of romantic topsy-turvydom, which is set in motion by a magician’s love potion in a teapot! EOH will be dedicating the performances to the Flanagan Trust in thanks for their generous support of EOH renovations.
The historic Earlville Opera House 1892 Theater is a perfect setting to see this two-act comic opera. “The Sorcerer” is a musical with history and was first performed in 1877 Victorian England. It was Gilbert and Sullivan’s third opera together. The comedy revolves around a newly engaged young man’s plan to improve his community according to his well-meaning principle that love should unite all classes and ranks. In Victorian England, these barriers to love were real. While his fiancée has misgivings about his plan, he hires a respectable London firm of sorcerers to come to their village to prepare a batch of love potion to transform the entire village, though the potion will have no effect on married people. This social engineering experiment meets with unexpected results and truly comical pairings that must be turned right in the end!
Rob Kolb directs the production. He is a Professor of Music at Hamilton College and has been a member of the faculty since 1981. Kolb is director of choral activities at Hamilton and is conductor of the Hamilton College and Community Oratorio Society. He directed Pirates of Penzance in 2008 and H.M.S. Pinafore at the EOH in 2006.
Sets and lighting are by Bill Burd and Jack Schenck and choreography is by Leslie Norton. Heather Bagnall will be designing costumes. Rosemary Jaytanie will accompany on piano. The players and musicians are from our own talented central NY community!
