The Horse Flies return to Colorscape after a much heralded first time performance at last year’s festival. One of the earliest bands to bring truly inventive ideas and energy to traditional American fiddle music, The Horse Flies have created a unique sound that remains fresh, powerful and captivating. Artful original songs, a wild groove-oriented approach to fiddle music, esteemed instrumental skills, and emotive singing come together as old-time fiddle music meets alternative rock, minimalism, modern songwriting and world percussion.
Aztec 2 Step is making a return engagement to Colorscape as well. Rex Fowler from Pittsfield, Maine, and Neal Shulman of New York City met one “open mike” night at a Boston folk club in the spring of 1971. Each impressed by the other’s talents, they joined forces and Aztec Two-Step (named for a line from “Coney Island of the Mind” by Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti) was born. After 30-plus years as a staple of FM radio, major label recording contracts and worldwide touring, Rex and Neal have become one of the folk music’s most popular and enduring acts. They continue to wow audiences with intelligent songwriting, hot acoustic lead guitar, and great harmonies.
Returning, too, after a few years absence, is Professor Louie and the Crowmatix. Professor Louie & the Crowmatix have the distinct honor of being the first artists to have a live concert recording released by The New York State Museum entitled The Spirit Of Woodstock. Their CD Century Of The Blues averaged # 20 for six months on the Americana Radio Roots charts and their music has consistently stayed on these charts for the past eight years. Professor Louie & The Crowmatix have been featured artists on syndicated radio shows, Acoustic Cafe, E-Town, public radio show Live At the Linda. The Mitch Albom Radio Show & Woodsongs Radio Hour.
Sara Milonovich has been playing the violin since she was four years old. She joined The Adirondack Fiddlers at age seven, and at age twelve released her first cassette of traditional fiddle tunes, Traditionally, Sara. She has performed with various classical ensembles throughout New York State, including the Empire State Youth and Repertory Orchestras, several string quartets, and with members of the Albany, Glens Falls, and Schenectady Symphonies. In 1998 she released the CD Mrs. Ippy Fiddle, under the name Sara Miles (as her last name was often mispronounced), which was a nominated semifinalist for the 1999 Grammy awards.
McPeake began life as nothing more than a group of musicians who came together for special gigs and occasions. They have worked with many prominent Irish artists including Brian Kennedy, Finbar Furey, Kieran Goss, Juliet Turner, and Ralph McTell. No musical borders are left uncrossed - the refreshing, varied sound of McPeake organically grows from its members. Each McPeake member is an artist in their own right. Each has performed with many international artists including Van Morrison, Mary Black, Ronan Keating, The McPeake Family, Riverdance, John Hurt, Denis Hopper, The Chieftains and more. Their experiences bring a twist to McPeake.
Writes Paul Zollo of Bob Malone, “The man contains multitudes – multitudes of rhythm, soul, jazz, blues, smoke and magic. He’s an astounding piano man, a deeply soulful singer and a tremendously gifted songwriter whose music merges strains of honky-tonk New Orleans, Memphis soul, Chicago blues, East Coast rock ‘n’ roll, the California sound and more, all rendered in a voice that marries the spirit of Dr. John with Elton John. He’s “the train that never stops,” as one writer put it – a musician forever on the road who has amassed a vast network of fans around the globe, all hungry for his newest musical offering.”
What started as a routine experiment has turned into a revolutionary project, henceforth known as The Hickory Project. The band features hard–driving traditional and original acoustic music with the expert licks of National Mandolin Champion Anthony Hannigan Steve Belcher, David Cavage and Dan Shipe, Coleman Smith, Mark Morris, Craig Vance and Billy Gilmore. The Hickory Project is globally acclaimed. They have captivated audiences throughout Europe, both the main land and Celtic Isles, Australia and all through the US. As musical ambassadors Hickory Project is taking their music worldwide.
Foot-stomping backwoods Americana - BLUBILLY: that describes the Horseshoe Lounge Playboys. They mix bluegrass with good ole old time country and Appalachian hair of the dog Hillbilly dance music! Here in the hills of Central New York, the Playboys are already well known. For those of you coming from out of the area, you’re in for a special treat when the Playboys take the stage.
L.J. Gates has been kicking around for quite a few blurry years. Originally formed in 1984, The LJ Gates Band has been through many incarnations. Whether playing rock, blues, country or originals, the focus has always been on the quality of the music and musicianship. Their self-titled CD was released in 2009.
Times are approximate and subject to change without notice. Musical entertainment is arranged by Night Eagle Productions, NBT Bank, grants from the Follett Foundaiton, Greater Norwich Foundation in memory of Eugene and Mildred Cole, the Evelyn S. Emerson Trust, and Decentralization Grant.
Located on the greens of East and West Parks in the city of Norwich, Colorscape features over 90 juried artists and crafters selling their wares in an interactive atmosphere that includes artist demonstrations, literary and arts activities for all ages, student art exhibits, a competitive poetry slam and the finest in creative food.
