Brandi Estelow Nursing Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament this Saturday at Blue Stone
OXFORD – Brandi Estelow was just 23 when she passed away last September, her life cut short by mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer linked to asbestos exposure.
Described as a vibrant, caring young woman by those who knew her, the 2004 Oxford graduate was pursuing a degree in nursing at Hartwick College in Oneonta when she was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2009. According to her mother, Dena Estelow, her daughter had dreamed of going into the medical field, and was particularly interested in being a pediatric nurse.
“She was in her junior year when she became sick,” Estelow said, adding that her daughter always believed she would beat the odds, and fully intended to walk with her class at graduation in June of this year.
Brandi never had a chance to fulfill her dream of working in the nursing profession, however. She died on Sept. 24 in Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. In the wake of her death, her family asked that memorial contributions be made to Oxford Dollars for Scholars. It was the donations to this fund which prompted the Estelows to create the Brandi Estelow Nursing Scholarship in memory of their daughter, the first recipient of which was Malorey Muzzy, a 2010 graduate of Oxford.
According to Estelow, the scholarship is both a way of seeing that others who share Brandi’s dream achieve their goal, and a way of giving back to the community which stood by the family through their ordeal.
“It was overwhelming,” she said, speaking of the level of support they received from the Oxford community. Part of that support was a benefit golf tournament at Blue Stone Golf Course to raise money to assist the family with the expense of trips back and forth to Boston.
This Saturday, the family will host another golf tournament, also at Blue Stone.
“All the proceeds we get will go right to the scholarship,” Estelow reported, which is awarded to an Oxford senior looking to pursue either a 2 or 4 year nursing degree. Their goal, she explained, is to award two of the $500 scholarships next year. The primary fundraiser for the fund will be the golf tournament, which they plan to make an annual event.
The captain and crew tournament will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start. The cost to participate is $30 per golfer for non-members, and $14 for members, which includes greens fees and cart rental. Golfers can participate in a closest to the pin competition, mulligans and skins for an additional fee. Donations are also welcome.
The event will also include raffles and other prizes, and conclude with a lunch provided by Brandi’s maternal grandparents, Sammy and Dick Diamond.
Those interested in registering a team should contact Blue Stone Golf Course at 843-8352.
