‘Great start’ for Norwich netters
ENDICOTT – Bryn Loomis was the top number one singles player at the 2010 Tiger Preseason tourney Wednesday, one of four Norwich players to take top honors in round-robin format that also included teams from Union-Endicott, Seton Catholic Central, and Horseheads.
Each player – and doubles team – faced off in a 10-game pro set format against each of the other teams’ players in the same spot. Loomis, squaring off against the other top singles players, won her first two matches, 10-1 and 10-2. She fell behind Christina Perry of Seton Catholic Central, 7-0, but picked up four straight games before losing 10-4. Loomis won 24 total games out of 37 played, a 64.8 winning percentage that was best among her group.
“This (tournament) was a great opportunity for us, and it turned out well,” said Norwich coach John Stewart.
Sophie Stewart, competing at second singles, won all three of her matches with a 70 percent games percentage to win her group, and the third doubles team of Gina Mecceriello and Shaniqua Yaccarino had a 3-0 mark on the day and a group-high 60 percent win percentage.
“We were looking to do something like this for many years to get the juices going,” Stewart said. “It’s a great format and prepares us well for the open of the season. The kids are seeing some of the best tennis players.”
Stewart added that Union-Endicott had two state tournament qualifiers on its team, and SCC along with Horseheads are defending division champions. “To compete with the best tennis players in Section IV, it was a great start,” Stewart said.
