Dollars for Scholars takes over district calendar as fundraiser

NORWICH – Residents of the Norwich City School District won’t be receiving school calendars in their mailboxes this year. But parents and other community members won’t have to look very far to find something to fill that designated spot on the refrigerator. They will be able to purchase a calendar produced by Norwich Dollars for Scholars, which has been endorsed by the district.

“We thought we could combine efforts,” said Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan, explaining that in the past many residents have purchased the DFS calendar in addition to receiving the free one in the mail.

The idea, he said, came from a suggestion made by a parent during the budget process.

“It might be a win-win for everybody,” the superintendent said. Eliminating the familiar purple and white publication will save the district approximately $8,000, between printing costs and mailing expenses, according to O’Sullivan. And Norwich students will benefit from the calendar sales, at least indirectly, since DFS provides thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors each year.

“It’s grown every year,” O’Sullivan said, referring to the amount of money given away in scholarships by the local non-profit group. “It’s a great organization.”
