NORWICH – Last season, it took Norwich and head coach John Martinson four games before it tasted the success of victory. After Friday night’s battle in the trenches with Whitney Point, Martinson was gently reminded that not only did his team win, but it won by a shutout.
“Whether it’s 42 to nothing or six to nothing, a win’s a win,” Martinson said after his team did pick up the 6-0 victory. “A shutout is a great way to start.”
Norwich had to suffer through some anxious moments in the waning stages of the fourth quarter. The Tornado failed on their opportunity to put the game away on the penultimate possession of the contest. Josh Favaloro launched Norwich to the Whitney Point 17 when he leapt and pulled in a 20-yard first-down pass from Seth Thomsen.
Mackay Hotaling was subsequently pushed back for a two-yard loss, Norwich committed a 10-yard holding penalty, and three plays later, a Thomsen pass fell incomplete.
Whitney Point quarterback Andrew Singer drove his team from the 25 to the Norwich 41 with under a minute to play. Singer extended the drive with a 15-yard first-down scramble, and he hit Cody Wood for eight yards on a fourth-and-eight to the NHS 41.
Following Wood’s catch, Singer threw a pass off the back of his foot under the pressure of the Norwich pass rush. Tornado senior Jon Foulds, who did not play varsity football last season, pulled in the interception to seal the victory.
“After halftime, we made some adjustments and I thought we executed well in the second half,” Martinson said. “We made some mistakes and had some foolish penalties, and I thought we should have put them away on our last drive. Even though we were able to take a knee at the end, I didn’t like that we had to play defense like we did on their last drive.”
Whitney Point’s defense stopped two Norwich first-quarter drives that proceeded inside the 30. A Thomsen fumble on the first drive was recovered by Dylan Bennett to end that possession, and two untimely penalties combined with a sack of Thomsen stalled the second drive.
Whitney Point had its best opportunity to score in the second quarter when Norwich botched a punt snap and gave the Eagles the ball at the NHS 15. The Norwich defense allowed just two yards on four plays to overcome its mishap.
“I thought we did a good job and gutted out this game,” said Whitney Point coach Mike Hakes. “I think Norwich, down the stretch, will be a tough team to beat. We played in a tough environment with a young team, and to lose 6-0 is nothing to hang your head about.”
The Golden Eagles moved the ball for two first downs to start the second half, yet were forced to punt the ball away. The Tornado held Whitney Point to 120 total yards of total offense, and managed just 221 hard-earned yards themselves. Eighty of those yards for NHS came on its lone scoring drive – its first of the second half.
After forcing the Point punt, Norwich went to Favaloro for a number of big gainers. Favaloro had runs of 22, 6, 17, and 10, and Patrick Taylor took an option pitch from Thomsen for 12 more yards. Tyler Hoffman completed the drive powering in from two yards out with just 7.9 seconds left in the stanza.
“I have to give Whitney Point’s defense a lot of credit tonight,” Martinson said. “They made sure we made the right calls and stayed on our blocks. It was an outstanding test for us and it’s a good thing we have a long week to prepare for Chenango Forks.”
Hotaling rushed 57 yards and Favaloro had 43 to lead Norwich’s attack.
