B-G 22, UV-Edmeston 13
NEW BERLIN – Not until Billy Holden’s interception return with around a minute to play did Bainbridge-Guilford finally put away a much-improved Unadilla Valley-Edmeston team on Friday night.
The Bobcats, a 2009 Class D playoff team, secured the win when Holden picked off a fourth-down pass from Storm quarterback Brandon Miles, and ran unfettered 10 yards. Danny Gormley took in a Ryan Porter pass for the all-important two-point conversion.
“It was just a slugfest,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly summing up the game. “They (UV-E) were hyped up at the beginning. They had a big pep rally and a band…the whole deal. They marched out with 40 kids and they were stoked. We got down early, but to our credit, we were able to pull out the victory.”
B-G turned the ball over on its second offensive play of the game, and UV-E capitalized on Miles’ 10-yard TD scamper.
The Bobcats drove for the go-ahead score in the second when Dakota Vandermark rushed it in from four yards. Porter tacked on the two-point run for an 8-7 lead at the break.
Porter scored in the third on a one-yard sneak, yet UV-E answered on Brett Gage’s two-yard TD run. A missed extra point by the Storm left them one-point shy, 14-13, until Holden’s touchdown.
“This really was a slugfest,” said UV-E coach Stan Foulds, concurring with Mattingly’s statement. “I think we came out really prepared and maybe we shocked them. They told us (B-G’s coaches) how impressed they were with how we looked. That’s what we like to hear.”
Vandermark rushed for 81 yards to lead B-G, and Gage had 50 yards for UV-E. “UV-E is vastly improved, and Stan is doing a nice job with his kids,” Mattingly said. “This is a good step forward for a team that hasn’t won in two years. I don’t see them taking the same route (winless) as last year.”

Oxford 41, Newfield 16
OXFORD – The last two season openers, Oxford didn’t even score a point. Friday night at home, the Blackhawks had 34 points on the board by halftime, and the starters were pulled after the first offensive series of the third quarter in a blowout victory over Newfield.
“We played well, were physical, and we really got after them on defense,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “Really, the only thing ugly was the penalties.”
The Blackhawks were flagged 16 times for 160 yards, yet still had 241 yards of offense and the aforementioned 40-plus points.
Paul Wonka delivered an option pass off a fake run attempt hitting a wide-open Adam Pierson for a 29-yard score to initiate the scoring. Chrystie said the play was set up perfectly after the team had executed a toss sweep running playing earlier in same the scoring drive.
John Wonka had a TD pass to Andrew Golden covering 15 yards, John Wonka scored on a one-yard rush, Alex Marin returned a fumble 50 yards to paydirt, and Paul Wonka’s five-yard run made it a 34-point lead at halftime.
Booker Davis, who led Oxford with 86 yards rushing, rambled 10 yards for six points early in the third quarter. “Newfield is definitely a young team, but I felt we gained a lot of confidence with this victory,” Chrystie said. “It’s a huge psychological advantage to win our opening game and to believe that we can win.”
Oxford is at Seton Catholic Central this week.

Oneonta 40, Greene 27
GREENE – Oneonta made two big special teams returns that led to a pair of early fourth-quarter touchdowns in a non-league victory over Greene Friday night.
Keegan Cerwinski’s three-yard scoring pass to Josh Brigham drew the Trojans even with Oneonta, 20-20, late in the third.
On the ensuing kickoff, Anthony Delgado broke off a 62-yard return that led to Keegan Trombley’s eight-yard TD scramble in the opening stages of the fourth.
Greene was forced to punt setting up Taharen Williams’ 36-yard return inside the Greene 30. Bryce Wooden broke off a 15-yard scoring jaunt, the first of his two fourth-quarter scores that lifted his team to a 32-20 lead with nine minutes left in the game.
“It was really a field position game,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “They scored two early touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but our kids kept fighting back.”
Greene embarked on a TD drive for its last points of the game after the Wooden score. Senior Kurt Shear, who rushed for a career-best 109 yards, trekked 28 yards, and the successful point-after pulled the Trojans within five points.
Oneonta, who had four turnovers in the game, was error-free on its final drive. Wooden’s one-yard plunge capped the scoring. “For us to give up 40 points, I don’t think that’s happened in a while,” Paske said. “Oneonta is a tough team with big guys up front, and they have backs that run the ball hard. They did some nice things against us.”
Trombley had 111 yards rushing and passed for 68 yards and one score to lead his team.
Cerwinski scored on a TD run in the first half, and Shear had a nine-yard six-pointer in the second stanza. “I was happy with the way we continued to respond, and our kids never gave up,” Paske said. “Any time you give up 40 points, though, you’re not going to win many games.”

Canastota 34, Sherburne-Earlville 15
CANASTOTA – Canastota’s offense hurt Sherburne-Earlville with its outside running game. The Marauders hurt themselves with four turnovers – two that led to Raiders touchdowns – in Friday’s Section III, Class C clash.
Canastota quarterback took the ball 24 yards on an option keeper for the 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Jeff Merrell upped the margin to two scores racing 25 yards for the second-quarter score. Merrell added the two-point run putting S-E in a 14-0 hole at halftime.
“We struggled offensively in the first half. I think we had maybe one or two first downs,” said S-E coach Mike Jasper. “To be honest, our defense was on the field too much.”
The Marauders picked up offensive momentum in the second half until fumbling the ball away. A few players later, the Raiders capitalized on Merrell’s 29-yard TD option pass to Richard Mitchell.
In three plays, S-E answered with its first score. Will Slentz ripped off two runs totaling 46 yards, and Chris Santiago completed the impressive drive dashing 35 yards.
With the deficit trimmed to 13, S-E’s defense held and was poised to cut further into the lead. After picking up a first down, the Marauders’ comeback was short-circuited when quarterback Ethan Johnson’s pass was tipped and intercepted. Canastota regained control of the game putting together a scoring drive that ended in Jamie Meade’s four-yard run.
“That interception killed any momentum we had,” Jasper said. “We started to get a little bit of an offensive running game going, the problem was the turnovers.”
S-E picked up its second score when Manuel Moreno returned a kickoff in the third quarter 65 yards for a touchdown. “Defensively, we did okay on the inside,” Jasper said. “We let them get to the edge too much. That’s something we’ll need to shore up.”
Jasper said that two-way starter Derreck Nelson, a senior, was injured in the first quarter and did not return to the game.
