Norwich PD to motorists: Use caution, common sense on first day of school
NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department is urging motorists to use caution on the road as school opens and hundreds of children will soon be walking to school and boarding buses all over Norwich.
“Now is the time for parents to practice the walk to school and reinforcing safe street crossing practices. The excitement that comes with the new school year can easily distract young pedestrians so motorists must be alert,” said Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino.
Additionally, motorists must allow for more time getting to work because of the extra pedestrians and school buses making frequent stops.
“The early morning combination of young children on the streets and motorists hurrying to work has potential for tragedy,” said Angelino. “Take this into account and leave a few minutes earlier.”
The Norwich PD offered theses basic street crossing tips to follow:
• Look in all directions before crossing a street
• Cross only at intersections
• Be especially watchful for turning cars from an adjacent street
• Obey traffic signals, sign and school crossing guards
• In rain, darkness and fog cars must use their headlights for visibility
Angelino said each year the Norwich PD responds to several car versus pedestrian accidents and in all cases someone failed to follow the suggested rules.
“Sometimes the cause is pedestrian error; other times the cause of motorist inattention, either way these accidents could have been prevented,” added the chief.
