Sherburne hosts benefit for Firefighter's Fund
SHERBURNE – This weekend, fire service members from across the county will be coming together in the Village of Sherburne to raise money to help tragedy-stricken firefighters and their loved ones in times of need.
The event is being held all day Saturday, the same day the Village of Sherburne Fire Department has sponsored a 7 p.m. candlelight vigil and memorial walk since the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City.
“The first of this planned annual event will be hosted by the Sherburne Fire Department on Saturday, Sept. 11. With the support and participation from all the fire departments of Chenango County, we hope to have a successful fundraising event,” said Chenango County Fire Chief’s Association President Douglas Shattuck.
The day will start with a wake up breakfast at the Sherburne Fire Station, a golf tournament at Mountain Top Golf Course, a cruise-in and poker run, an auction, food and live entertainment. The entire event will be staffed by volunteers and all the money raised will be donated to the Chenango County Firefighter’s Fund.
“This is a special fundraiser to provide assistance to Chenango County firefighters and their families at a time of serious need from life threatening illness or injury or other catastrophic hardship,” he said.
Shattuck explained the Red Knights and the Chief’s Association decided to create the Chenango County Firefighter’s Fund after some local fire service families struggled to cope with the untimely death of their loved ones. Frequently individual fire departments take up the role of providing support and raising money for the family with volunteers organizing dinners, raffles and other similar events.
“While we all realize the time, dedication and sacrifice of our firefighters and emergency personnel, we also realize we need to be prepared to help and support our brothers and sisters in their time of medical crisis,” said Shattuck. “We are hopeful this effort will encourage the citizens of our communities to extend their appreciation for the valuable services our firefighters and emergency persons provide.”
Shattuck explained the county-wide fund is meant to provide additional support to service members and not take the place of other events organized by the local departments, which are almost always put together in reaction to a tragedy.
“Instead of waiting for a tragedy to happen, we thought it might be a good idea to have something already in place,” said Shattuck. “Not that this will take the place of any other fundraising, but it offers a place for a struggling family to start.”
The groups will also take part in the village’s annual 9/11 Memorial walk to commemorate those who died in the attack on New York City in 2001, said Fire Chief Patrick Lawrence.
“This has been a community tradition since after the attacks. Many firemen and emergency personnel died that day and we’re all part of that brotherhood, but really it’s about doing something in the local community to honor all those who were killed,” said Lawrence.
Lawrence said participants for the walk gather at the Sherburne Fire Station just before 7 p.m. Saturday and travel to Gaines Park a short distance away, where local clergymen will conduct a brief prayer service. Uniformed firemen will join the pedestrian procession which is followed by a single fire truck.
“It’s a meant to be a silent reminder, where people take a little time to reflect. All in the public are welcome to join us,” he said. Anyone participating in the memorial walk is asked to bring a candle.
