S-E forces tie with Hamilton

Field Hockey

S-E 1, Hamilton 1
HAMILTON – It was a step in the right direction for the Sherburne-Earlville field hockey team, who earned a tie with Hamilton Wednesday in the Marauders’ season-opening game.
S-E dropped both games to the Emerald Knights a season ago when it won just three games. “We did some really good things,” Cooman said. “Our one goal had perfect execution – just how you draw it up.”
Down 1-0 to Hamilton, S-E tied it with 6:07 left in the first half. Michelle Mackey and Kirstie Hackett made pinpoint passes off a penalty corner to Ashley Cappadonia, who drilled the shot past the Hamilton goalie.
Katherine Robertson made 12 saves for S-E to help preserve the tie.
The Marauders host Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Friday at 6 p.m. in the first round of S-E’s field hockey tournament. The consolation game and finals are Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. respectively.

Boys’ Soccer

Johnson City 3, Norwich 1
JOHNSON CITY – Hans Purtell scored on a breakaway just 2:37 into the game, and finished with a hat trick in Johnson City’s win over Norwich Wednesday.
Purtell added a second goal on a penalty kick before David Layman connected for Norwich. Layman scored after passes from Tim Mennis and Bill Whaley.
“Giving up that early goal makes it that much tougher to come back,” said Norwich coach John McCumiskey. “We’ve talked about tightening up on defense at the start, and it was disappointing to get caught flat across the back line.”
McCumiskey said the Norwich defense and goalie Nate Perry had a solid second half in keeping JC off the board. “I think we found some guys (on defense) in different positions,” McCumiskey said.
Norwich hosts Owego Friday at 7 p.m.

Goals-assists: (JC) Hans Purtell, 3-0 (one PK), Kyle Kocan, 0-1, Josh Hodges, 0-1. (N) David Layman, 1-0, Tim Mennis, 0-1, Bill Whaley, 0-1.

Greene 1, Unatego 0
GREENE – Greene is already one win from matching last year’s total, and the Trojans continued to build on their good start with a shutout win over perennial MAC contender Unatego.
Sierra Marker scored on a long-range shot from outside the 18-yard box when the Unatego goalie bobbled the save before allowing it into the net. “It was a tough goal for them to give up,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone.
The Trojans (3-0-1) opened the season with a victory over Walton, and had a win and a tie in their own tournament a weekend ago – the victory coming against Class B Waverly. “It’s definitely been a very good start to the season,” Stone said.
Greene plays at Sidney next Tuesday.
