Plymouth hosts inaugural Community Day

PLYMOUTH – The Town of Plymouth will hold its first-ever Community Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Plymouth Fire Hall, 3461 Route 23. The event is an opportunity for local residents to meet with community leaders and support groups.
According to Community Day Chair Linda Powell-Owens, Community Day was first discussed among congregants of the Plymouth Methodist Church as a way to thank community members for their donations and try to bring residents together for a town picnic.
Through several brainstorming sessions, the event grew from there into a “meet and greet with town officials and local organizations,” said Powell-Owens, including the United Methodist Church, Volunteer Fire Department, Post Office, Old Mill Christian Life Fellowship, Plymouth Historical Society and Plymouth Watershed.
“This being our first Community Day, there’s no telling how many people to expect, but our goal is to bring the town together,” said Powell-Owens. “So far there’s been a lot of support and interest and we’re hoping to develop this further in the future as a community.”
Each organization involved in the development of the gathering will be represented, stated Powell-Owens, who added there will be refreshments available and games for the kids.
In addition, the first hundred in attendance will receive a newly designed community directory which features a listing of local goings-on and important contact information.
The cover of the directory was hand-drawn by local resident Marjorie Lewis and depicts the milkweed, the town’s newly announced community logo, according to Powell-Owens.
“We’re hoping to get more people in the town involved, as both our churches are struggling and the historical society is down to two people,” stated Powell-Owens. “Preserving the history of the town is important to local residents.”
There will be a 10:30 a.m. church service in Foster Park, Town of Plymouth, prior to Community Day. For more information visit www.plymouthny.net.
