Monday Evening Musical Club begins its second century
NORWICH – The Monday Evening Musical Club will kick off its 2010-2011 program year in style with the Red Raville Jazz Septet presenting a program of Dixieland and Swing Jazz. Such favorites as A Train, Satin Doll, It Don’t Mean a Thing, Bill Bailey and Basin Street will be featured on the program. Performers include Red Raville, piano; Doug Keith, trumpet; Bill Pomares, sax and clarinet; Henry Carpenter, trombone; Kathy Thielke, drums and Carl Pickett, bass.
Last year the club celebrated its 100th anniversary. This year, as the club enters its second century of promoting music among its members and in the community at large, it will inaugurate a second scholarship fund to be awarded to worthy high school students who are taking private music lessons. The club has been awarding scholarships to students majoring in music in college since 1954. The club will continue its policy of financing its scholarship funds by accepting free will donations at its monthly programs, which are open to the public.
The concert takes place on Monday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the United Church of Christ, 11 West Main St., Norwich. All are welcome.
