Longtime Sherburne supervisor Harry Conley mourned

NORWICH – The Chenango County Board of Supervisors planned to attend the funeral services of one of their own in a group this afternoon, as they and others were very sad to learn yesterday of Harry Conley’s death.
Former Town of Sherburne Supervisor Harry Wayne Conley, 81, passed away Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 at his home. He retired from public service last year after 21 years on the town and county board.
According to Chenango County Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard B. Decker, Conley was known as a perfect gentleman. “I never knew him to lose his temper nor be short in any way with those who may have disagreed with him,” said Decker, who worked along side Conley for the past 14 years and counted him as a friend.
“He was always looking for what was best for the citizen’s of Sherburne and for Chenango County. I’m going to miss him.”
Conley was self-employed for many years as a building contractor, and later operated a sawmill in Smyrna. He then became active in community affairs, serving on the Sherburne-Earlville School Board, and later was elected to the Sherburne Town Board for several years before becoming the Town Supervisor in 1996.
As chairman of the Chenango County Public Works Committee, he was outspoken about keeping the roadways maintained and the landfill’s tipping costs low enough for working people to afford. He was a long time member of the Finance Committee.
“He had a great weight to his comments,” said William C. Craine who succeeded Conley as town supervisor in January.
Friends are invited to call at the First United Methodist Church in Sherburne from 4 to 7 p.m. today.
