Hospice volunteer training set for Village of Greene

GREENE – Hospice of Chenango County will bring its volunteer training course to the village of Greene for the first time. The goal is to increase the number of trained volunteers in the southern part of the county. Greene residents may not realize that they can see a doctor in Broome County and still utilize the services of Hospice of Chenango County. Those same patients often request a volunteer, and it’s easier to make a match with a patient and volunteer that live in the same community.
“We wanted to make it easy for residents in the vicinity of Greene to be trained, without them having to drive to Norwich,” said Kendall Drexler, Volunteer Coordinator for the agency. We are looking to increase our volunteer numbers in that area to serve patients and their families.” Drexler says she wants to make training as convenient as possible for our friends in Greene. Residents of Bainbridge, Brisben, and Coventry may also wish to sign up for the course in Greene and cut down on their drive time to the next Hospice training, which will take place in Norwich in the spring of 2011.
The 3 1/2 week training course will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 28. Volunteers in training will meet during the day for a few hours two times a week at the First Congregational Church at 28 North Chenango Street. If you would like more information call the Hospice office at 334-3556 and ask for Kendall. Space is limited and pre-interviews are required, so you should make contact by Sept. 20.
Hospice of Chenango County is a health care agency that brings physical, emotional, and spiritual care most often to the patient’s home. Hospice accepts referrals from physicians, clergy, family and friends. Follow up contact is then made by a certified Hospice RN to set up a care plan that will meet the wishes of the patient and caregivers.
Hospice is a not for profit agency that receives reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. However, there is a sizeable gap between those funds and the actual cost of care. Fundraisers and solicitations are necessary to fill the widening gap. Gifts to the “Friends of Hospice” Campaign can be made at any time by calling the Hospice office.
