Norwich gridders play at Vestal tonight
Averaging just six points a game through the first two weeks, Norwich continues its non-league string to start the season tonight at Vestal’s Dick Hoover Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. The contest was moved from its original Friday date as the Vestal school district is observing the holy Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur this weekend, and no sports activities are scheduled.
“Their board of education met, and decided to recognize Yom Kippur,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “It was something that was out of our hands.”
Unlike Norwich, Vestal has had little trouble putting points on the board. In week one, the Golden Bears blew out 2009 Class B champion Waverly, 41-14, and last week, earned an impressive 20-14 victory over Binghamton.
Binghamton gained well over 400 yards of offense, but a 97-yard interception return by the Bears’ Nick Keeler was a huge difference maker. Bruising running back Thad Zaparzynski racked up 113 rushing yards and two TD runs as well.
“They’re a very solid team and very disciplined,” Martinson said. “They can spread you out and throw it all over, but they have a strong running game. Coach Anderson (Tank) has made a complete turnaround from last year, and they’re playing with a lot of confidence.”
Norwich (1-1) has struggled with consistency on offense. It is averaging just 160 total yards a game through two weeks, and was held to less than 100 yards by a stingy Chenango Forks defense a week ago. “We need to put more points on the board,” Martinson said. “We want to come out and play Norwich football and spread it around.”
Tonight is the Tornado’s final tuneup before they enter division play next week against Susquehanna Valley.
