Solemn 9-11 ceremony in Oxford’s LaFayette Park

OXFORD – An 8:45 a.m. morning ceremony was held on Saturday in LaFayette Park, led by Cub Scout Pack 65, to commemorate the anniversary of the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. This day of somber remembrance and reflection was attended by local dignitaries, marked by prayer, patriotic music, mementos, and flag dedications. It ended with two special flags being raised at the Oxford Fire Department.
In a speech given by Pack 65 Cub Master Karen Covell, she reminded community members present, of the acts of heroism that marked a Tuesday in 2001 and the national show of unity that followed. Covell said, “On this ninth anniversary, we’re here to show support to those who perished.”
The Cub Master handed newspapers from 9/11/01 for some of the Cub Scouts to exhibit as well as an embroidered 9-11 Oxford Police Dept. patch. Pack 65 also unfurled a special “Flag of Heroes” flag that contains the names of the emergency services personnel who gave their lives to save others in the terrorist attacks of 9-11.
The honorable Village of Oxford Mayor Terry Stark was present along with Police Dept. Chief Rich Nolan and PD member and 1st Asst. Chief of the FD - Ron Martin; Fire Dept. member John Covell; Oxford American Legion Post #376 Commander Jim Caron; and 1st Vice Commander Ron Blandford. Cub Master Covell was assisted by Webelos Scouts Leader Mike Ford and Bear Cubs Scout Leader Mark Roach. Participating Cub Scouts were Zachary Ford, Brian Huggins, Matthew Roach, and Mark Drewniak Jr.. Troop 55 Boy Scout member Andrew Audas participated along with Kelsey Drewniak, an “honorary scout”.
A moment of silence and a prayer was said by the Reverend Allen C. Lang. Patriotic music was played by the United Church of Oxford Praise Band members: Ed Audas, Tom Rice, Allen Lang, Don Sheldon, Kristen Audas, Margaret Davis and Donna Cuyle.
The “Flag of Heroes” along with a U.S. flag donated by the Oxford American Legion were both raised on the flag pole in front of the Oxford Fire Dept. They will be honorably flown there until the end of September.
