Former bank teller pleads guilty

NORWICH – The last of two codefendants pleaded guilty in Chenango County Court Monday after the former NBT Bank employees admitted their roles in the theft of $77,797.50, while working for the company.
Tabitha M. Eccleston, 26, of Sherburne told Judge W. Howard Sullivan she was aware her co-worker at the time was stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the bank while accepting about $10,200 of that between January 2008 and March 2009.
She pleaded guilty to fifth degree criminal possession of a stolen property, a misdemeanor. She was ordered to repay the stolen amount and will serve three years probation in the plea arrangement with prosecutors.
District Attorney Joseph McBride said Eccleston was guilty of accepting money from the thefts, but was not convicted of stealing the money directly.
Co-conspirator, 28-year-old Kimberly N. Aitken of Norwich, pleaded guilty to second degree grand larceny March 5.
“At some point I become suspicious that Kimberly was stealing from the bank,” Eccleston told the court. Eccleston had originally been accused of participating in the thefts by investigators and was charged with second degree grand larceny, a felony.
In contrast to Eccleston’s agreement with prosecutors, Aitken threw herself at the mercy of the court before Judge Sullivan in March without any plea deal.
Aitken said she stole the money while working as a teller supervisor at NBT’s main branch on South Broad Street in the City of Norwich, where Eccleston was also a teller.
Sullivan said Aitken could serve a maximum period of incarceration from five to 15 years in a New York State prison for the plea.
Aitken was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility after the plea and has not yet been scheduled to reappear for her official sentencing. Aitken was released from jail without any bail Sept. 3 after Sullivan signed for her release.
Aitken and Eccleston were arrested after an April 2009 investigation by the Norwich City Police Department and NBT bank security.
