State police charge dozens of drunk drivers in area sting
NORWICH – The New York State Police successfully took part in a national two week campaign to catch area drunk drivers with officers in Troop C arresting 62 people, eight of them in the Chenango County area.
Troop “C” Commander Major Kevin G. Molinari released the results for the “Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest” campaign for the Southern Tier Wednesday.
“The Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest campaign has concluded with very positive results for commuters in the Southern Tier. During the period August 20 through September 6, troop C members affected 62 arrests for driving while intoxicated; one associated with a motor vehicle collision which claimed the lives of two occupants and two which fell under the definition of Leandra’s Law.”
Leandra’s Law was created after 11-year-old Leandra Rosado was killed in the car accident, allegedly because the driver of the vehicle was intoxicated. The state legislature passed the law Dec. 18 which makes driving drunk with any child passenger under the age of 15, a felony offense. The law also allows for multiple felony counts to be filed for multiple underage occupants.
