Greene shuts out Windsor
Football
Greene 27, Windsor 0
WINDSOR ≠– Greene ran for 312 yards, and forced five turnovers for its fifth shutout out win over the last three seasons.
After struggling to put points on the board in the first half and clinging to a six-point lead, the Trojans erupted for three scores in the third quarter. Using five plays on its first drive of the second half, Keegan Cerwinski scored on a 16-yard scramble, his second touchdown of the day. Windsor was forced to punt on its next drive, and Greene once again marched to paydirt. Kurt Shear scored from one yard out making it a 21-0 lead.
Shear forced a fumble of Windsor running back Garret Gaeta on the subsequent possession, and James Church recovered. On the next play, Jeff Carlin dashed 44 yards for the Trojans’ fourth score of the day.
Cerwinski had 110 yards rushing, and Shear finished with 71 on 17 carries. “We worked hard all week on tackling fundamentals and geting guys pursuing to the ball,” said Greene coach Tim Paske of his team’s defense, who praised the efforts of his defensive linemen, Kyle Stanton, Ricky Carbone, Justin Beers, Isaiah Webb, and Church. “We did a great job of executing.”
Friday night was also the third straight game in which Greene ran for big yardage. Through three games, the Trojans are averaging 306 yards rushing per game.
“We had trouble moving their defensive tackles in the first half,” Paske said. “We changed our scheme, and we started knocking them all over.”

UV-Edmeston 13, S-VE 6
SPENCER – Unadilla Valley-Edmeston was held to just four first downs, but came away with its second straight victory – its first two-game winning streak in four seasons – thanks to stout defense and opportunistic special teams.
Late in the first half, UV-E head coach Stan Foulds called a timeout as SV-E was pinned near its goal line and forced to punt on fourth down. Cody Homann received the punt, and dashed 33 yards for the touchdown as the second-quarter clock expired.
“It’s a good thing we called that timeout because we wouldn’t have had time for a return,” Foulds said.
The Storm (2-1) scored on its only sustained drive early in the second quarter. Brandon Miles found Homann on a nine-yard scoring pass to make it 6-0.
Spencer-Van Etten, like UV-E’s first two opponents, had little success running against the Storm defense, and was forced to pass that ball. Foulds singled out the quarterback pressure of defensive ends Calvin Rifanburg and Zach Montgomery, and lauded his entire defense.
“On either side of the ball, you can have a good day or a bad day,” Foulds said. “Our defense stepped up and won this football game. We just stood their running game up, and our ends and up-front pressure made things happen. We covered their ends well in the passing game and played an all-around good defensive game.”

Bainbridge-Guilford 18, Harpursville 12
HARPURSVILLE – Bainbridge-Guilford stopped Harpursville at its own four-yard line on a fourth-and-inches with less than two minutes to play in the final stanza to preserve its Class D divisional win on Saturday.
B-G (1-1, 2-1) went on a 14-play, 81-yard drive earlier in the fourth quarter to take the lead. Billy Holden capped the drive rushing it in from nine yards out. “This win keeps us going in the right direction,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Our defense shutting them out in the second half was huge for us.”
The Hornets and Bobcats traded touchdowns in the opening half. Isaac Gato had a pair of six-yard TD runs for Harpursville, while Dakota Vandermark dashed 32 yards for B-G’s first score, and Daren Terpstra’s six-yard scamper in the second quarter tied the game at 12-apiece.
B-G racked up a season-high 357 yards rushing, but fumbled four times – losing two. “We’re not taking anything away from Harpursville, they were amped up and it was a pretty physical game,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “I was pleased with our backs and the line did an okay job of blocking, we just need to finish drives and do a better job taking care of the ball.”
Vandermark had a game-high 173 yards rushing, and Holden finished with 101.
The Bobcats play at Seton Catholic Central on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Frankfort-Schuyler 12, Sherburne-Earlville 3
FRANKFORT – Sherburne-Earlville had one touchdown called back by penalty, and an ill-timed infraction in the second half led to Frankfort-Schuyler’s insurance TD in Friday night’s road loss.
Joe Cooper hit Gerald Post on a long pass play in the first quarter setting up Cooper’s one-yard streak for the 6-0 lead.
S-E drove for an apparent score in the second stanza when Ethan Johnson hooked up with Austin Jasper for the score. A false-start penalty denied the Marauders a tying touchdown, and it had to settle for Justin Coye’s 31-yard field goal.
F-S took the ball on its opening possession of the second half inside the red zone, but the Marauders’ defense stiffened up, and on fourth down, threw Cooper for a loss. On that play, S-E was flagged for a “horse collar” penalty to extend the possession, and Post scored to finish the drive and the scoring.
“I’m proud of the way we stayed in the game, even when faced with adversity,” said S-E coach Mike Jasper. “This team does not want to fold, and that says something about our character.”
The Marauders’ offense struggled with just 135 yards of total offense, although the defense was respectable in limiting F-S to 214 yards – an almost even split of rushing and passing.
“We keep hurting ourselves with turnovers and penalties,” Jasper said, “and those things will cost you in tight games, and they cost us tonight. I felt like we had a chance to win, and the kids played to win. It’s just too bad those things (penalties) played such a big role in the outcome of the game.”
After three successive road games, the Marauders play their home opener on Friday against Westmoreland.
