McLaughlin's joins Alzheimer’s Association for Memory Walk
NORWICH – When McLaughlin’s Department Store owner Scott McLaughlin lost his father Spencer to Alzheimer’s Disease in May of 2009, both he and his wife Anna knew getting involved in the battle versus the debilitating disease was a must.
In the end, the McLaughlin family decided to hold its own fundraising effort in support of the Alzheimer’s Association and its Memory Walk, the nation’s largest event aimed at raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research, according to www.alz.org.
Ever since his father was first diagnosed with the disease, McLaughlin said he and his family have been “determined to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s” and the Memory Walk serves as both a tribute to Spencer and a way to give back to the association.
Throughout this spring and summer, the downtown department store has offered its customers an opportunity to donate with the sale of ice cream bars and “A Reason to Hope” wristbands, with all proceeds going toward the cause. In addition, both the Norwich and Oneonta stores recently held a bake sale and the Norwich location held an employee bottle drive.
Anna McLaughlin said the efforts have paid off and reported approximately $2,000 in donations collected to date.
“Really I’m amazed at how many bracelets we’ve been able to sell,” said Anna, who wished to thank the community for its continued support. “It’s surprising how many people are affected by Alzheimer’s and the statistics are kind of staggering.”
More than five million Americans currently suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease – which accounts for an estimated 60 to 80 percent of all dementia cases – with upwards of 320,000 of those in New York State alone, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. In addition, approximately 78 million baby boomers are at risk as the disease typically affects those age 65 and up.
“The Alzheimer’s Association is an important part in the lives of patients and families dealing with the disease,” Anna said. “The information that they provide is really essential in helping family members deal with Alzheimer’s.”
Registration for the Alzheimer’s Association Central New York Chapter Memory Walk will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic Care Community of New York, 2150 Bleecker Street, Utica. For more information on the Alzheimer’s Association and the Memory Walk visit www.alz.org. To make a donation to the McLaughlin Memory Walk team, call 334-7040.
