NHS Marching Band set to showcase 2010 show

NORWICH – With a one rehearsal left to go, the Norwich Purple Tornado Marching Band is set to open its 2010 season on Friday with the annual Homecoming Parade and a half-time performance of this year’s program – “Conquest and Courage: A Crusaders’ Fable.”
According to Director Lansing Dimon, the show’s medieval theme was inspired in part by the music of motion pictures such as “Dragonheart” and “First Knight” and is an attempt to portray the epic battle scenes associated with the Middle Ages and the Crusades.
“We were really looking for something people would recognize, something familiar, and the students seemed to latch onto this,” stated Dimon. “We’re starting off with a lot more experience this year and we’ve upped the intensity level. We’re a little more focused and that’s something the students wanted.”
Dimon said the ensemble’s victory at the Sherburne Pageant of Bands this summer “kind of energized the kids” and he felt that “in some ways it legitimizes we’re on the right path, not that winning is everything.”
Drum Major and NHS senior Katrina McMinn said she believes the band as a whole is working “twice as hard” this year and hopes the end result will be apparent.
“It’s all about the visuals this year and it’s a great show,” she added. “The music is different than it has been in past years.”
Besides the group’s regularly scheduled pair of two-and-a-half hour rehearsals per week, Dimon reported a successful Band-a-Thon this year, which raised over $4,600 toward a planned band trip in the spring of 2011. Band members were challenged to rehearse for approximately 14 hours throughout the fundraiser, equivalent to almost two weeks of regular rehearsal.
“The show is coming together and the spirit, enthusiasm, sense of commitment and preparation are well above last year’s program,” he added.
“I’m really excited about this year’s show. It’s probably one of the coolest shows I’ve done,” stated six-year member and Marching Band Student President Shannon Richards. “The music is a lot more catchy and even though it’s not from a specific movie it will be much easier to grasp. Visually, it’s awesome.”
Color Guard member Anna Snow agreed and added there’s “a lot of interesting color guard work and it’s definitely more challenging. We’re doing things we’ve never done before but we’re more focused now, we’re determined to do our best. I think we’re ready for this.”
The NHS Homecoming Parade will line-up at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in the P&C parking lot. At 6 p.m. the parade will travel eastward to Midland Avenue and on to the stadium. On Saturday, the Purple Tornado Marching Band will travel to Oswego for its first field band competition. For more information visit www.norwichcsd.org.
