Backo, Newell record aces at Bluestone

OXFORD – Roy Backo of Sherburne and Patrick Newell of Norwich recently recorded Bluestone Golf Course’s third and fourth holes-in-one of the 2010 golf season.
Backo, playing in the Tuesday Night Men’s League, fashioned his perfect shot on the 125-yard seventh hole. Backo used an 8-iron for his first career ace, and it was witnessed by Terry Finch, Todd Hall, and Tim Roberts.
“I hit it absolutely perfect,” Backo said. “It hit it about foot past the hole, and with the backspin, it hopped right back into the hole.”
Newell carded his ace on Wednesday, Sept. 22 playing the upper tees on the 130-yard eighth hole. Paired with Aidamarie Rull, Newell used a pitching wedge for his first-ever hole-in-one. “The shot landed pin-high about a foot to the right of the hole,” Newell said. “It hopped left and slam-dunked into the hole. What’s funny is that I hit almost the exact same shot two days earlier, and it one-hopped into the weeds 10 yards beyond the green.”
