Rogers named dean of students at Oxford
OXFORD – Oxford High School has a new dean of students: U.S. History teacher Jonathan Rogers.
Rogers was appointed to the position for the 2010-11 school year by the district’s board of education on Sept. 13. According to District Clerk Michele Rice, he is to receive a stipend of $2,392 for assuming the additional responsibility.
Oxford High School Principal Janet Laytham said Rogers will have “big shoes to fill” in the role, which was formerly held by Timothy Calice. Calice left Oxford for a position with the Greene Central School District last month. Laytham said she was pleased when Rogers applied for the vacancy, and received the appointment.
“Jon has worked in the district for a long time, and was a student here himself, so he knows many of our students and families,” the building administrator explained. “He also has a rapport with students that I think will make him very effective in the role of Dean.”
Rogers, a 1987 graduate of Oxford Academy, has taught in the district since 1996. Prior to the 2009-10 school year, he served as a social studies teacher in the Oxford Middle School. Last year, his position was shared between both buildings. He currently teaches U.S. History at the High School, and is president of the Oxford Teacher’s Association.
As dean of students, Rogers will play an important role in the school’s discipline process. He will work closely with the building principal and staff to ensure the school’s rules “are followed and enforced equally and fairly.” Part of that will involve “assigning consequences” to students who receive discipline referrals from teachers.
“I think I can effectively act as a bridge between the students and the Administration,” said Rogers.” I believe I can execute these duties with a level of fairness and frankness that the students and the parents can rely on and trust.”
