Few races locally on November ballot

NORWICH – Voters in the towns of Columbus and Guilford will have a choice of candidates for government offices next month. Otherwise, the incumbents whose terms are expiring are running opposed.
At the county level, William C. Craine, R-Sherburne, is on the ballot to become Chenango County treasurer. Craine, who took over from the late Harry Conley as Sherburne’s supervisor last fall, announced his candidacy for the county post upon 22-year-veteran Treasurer William E. Evans’ retirement announcement in June.
In the Town of Columbus, Sara L. Paddock of the Independence Party and Pamela J. Weidman, a Democrat, will be on the ballot vying to fill the one-year supervisor term left open when George C. Coates resigned last winter.
For Guilford Town Council, current incumbent Republican Michael G. Miles hopes to retain his appointed position. He has competition, however, in Republican Gary W. Schultes, who petitioned to run on an independent line, Dairy Party.
A proposition on the ballot for McDonough residents would increase the terms of office for town supervisor, highway superintendent and clerk from two years to four, effective Jan. 1, 2012. Voters have the choice to vote yes or no for the proposed Local Law No. 2.
In the town of Smyrna, appointed highways superintendent Robert D. Graham, a Democrat, is running unopposed to fill the vacancy left by 32-year veteran Gary R. Graham, his brother. Gary retired in May.
In Bainbridge, Councilman James A. Maddonne, a Republican, is running unopposed to retain the seat he was appointed to for another year. He filled the vacancy left when Dolores Nabinger became town supervisor.
In German, councilwoman Stella Penny Lum is running unopposed. And in Otselic, Clerk Nika M. Cole is also a shoe-in again for the office.
Justices for four-year terms are needed in the towns of Afton, Bainbridge, Coventry and Lincklaen. The current incumbents in all of the towns run unopposed: Democrat Ronald A. Sherman in Afton, Republican Randall W. Lambrecht in Bainbridge, Democrat Russell C. Lerwick in Coventry, and Republican Justin W. Rice in Lincklaen.
The Republican Party Committee filled two vacancies each in Coventry and Guilford. Supervisor John M. Phelan Sr. and Robert E. Boudreau were selected in Coventry District 1. In Guilford District 1, Supervisor George J. Seneck and Jane P. Winchester were selected.
