Bobcats stay in playoff hunt
Bainbridge-Guilford 24, Oxford 6
OXFORD – Bainbridge-Guilford scored on its first play from scrimmage, and stunned Oxford Friday night to keep itself in the Class D division title picture.
Billy Holden popped through the middle of the line, and the big fullback showing surprising burst as he ran 67 yards for the opening touchdown. “Really, it was just a simple dive play,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Booker (Davis, Oxford linebacker) was stunting, and we were able to pick him up. Our line created a tight mini-wall and Billy ran through the two hole. He has good speed, and I think he caught Oxford’s defense off guard. Once he broke into the second level, he was gone.”
Oxford drew to within one point early in the second quarter on John Wonka’s eight-yard run. The missed extra point left Oxford a point shy of the Bobcats.
Holden – along with senior halfback Dakota Vandermark – continued to pepper the Oxford defense with a solid rushing attack. Holden scored on a 35-yard run in the second quarter, and Vandermark added one of his typical long runs scoring from 75 yards in the fourth. German exchange student, Tim Herman, squeezed a 30-yard field goal between those two TD runs – the first field goal for a B-G kicker in Mattingly’s time on the B-G varsity staff.
Holden had a season-high 142 yards, Vandermark rushed for 136 yards – his fourth 100-yard game this season – and B-G outrushed Oxford 326-84.
Paul Wonka carried the ball for 61 yards to lead Oxford, and John Wonka threw for 101 yards, but was intercepted three times. “Our offensive and defensive lines really stepped up in this game, and I thought we were very physical with Oxford,” Mattingly said. “With the exception of our turnovers (four), we played one of our better games. This win still gives us a shot in the division, and it was like a playoff game for both teams. We needed this.”

Greene 35, Unatego 15
GREENE – Greene got back on track, but not until it found itself in a 7-0 hole.
The Trojans scored four times in the second quarter, and held Unatego’s offense in check until the final stanza to win their first division game.
“That first drive, they hit a couple of passes, after that, they completed only one pass,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “I thought our defense adjusted pretty well.”
Keegan Cerwinski scored for Greene on an eight-yard run, and the Trojans moved ahead just 19 seconds later. Dan Treadwell recovered a Unatego fumble on the next play from scrimmage, and Cerwinski hit Josh Brigham on a nine-yard scoring toss. Isaiah Webb recovered a fumble in the endzone for the unlikely two-point conversion.
Cerwinski added a five-yard run later in the quarter, and with under two minutes in the half, Cerwinski went up top to Brigham hitting his receiver for a 40-yard score.
Kurt Shear scored on a one-yard run in the fourth, and led Greene with 171 yards rushing. Cerwinski added 101 yards, and he passed for 49 yards. “We did a heck of a job after the first quarter, and we’re back in the (division) hunt,” Paske said.

Sidney 56, UV-Edmeston 6
NEW BERLIN – Sidney scored on its first offensive play, and didn’t stop scoring until the game was well out of reach.
Dylan Umbra threw six touchdown passes – all in the first three quarters – finishing 14-for-24 for 308 yards. Umbra hooked up with Andy Kozak on a 65-yard TD pass putting the Warriors on the board just 16 seconds into the game.
“They’re just a machine with their passing game,” said UV-Edmeston coach Stan Foulds. “We tried a couple different things, and they just didn’t work. Their receivers are really good, and they catch the ball where (Umbra) throws it.”
Umbra scored on a one-yard sneak midway through the first quarter, and the Warriors were poised to put up their third touchdown of the first quarter when UV-E quarterback Brandon Miles fumbled after getting sacked, and Sidney recovered the ball inside UV-E’s 15. Umbra looked for a touchdown pass on the next play, but the Storm’s Eli Conklin intercepted the ball and was tackled at the one.
UV-E’s Brett Gage popped a 73-yard run to get the Storm out of its own defensive end, and Will Westbrook completed a 99-yard drive with a two-yard TD run cutting the score to 16-6. That would be the gist of the Storm’s scoring offense, although UV-E did manage a season-high 214 yards rushing, while allowing Sidney just 94 yards on the ground.
Umbra found Josh Wilce on a pair of TD passes in the second quarter, and connected with Kozak with 3:30 left in the half raising the count to 40-6.
“We ran the ball very well and played pretty well on offense,” Foulds said. “It doesn’t look that way on the scoreboard, it just wasn’t our night.”
Gage finished with a season-best 118 yards on the ground, and Westbrook also had his best day rushing for 74 yards.
