Marauders place high at own invitational

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s boys and girls finished second overall at the annual S-E Invitational as the weather turned favorable for Saturday’s morning’s race.
The Marauders’ boys were buoyed by a 4-5-6 finish among 52 runners. Noah Huff paced the S-E harriers timing 18:23. He was followed by Dan Palmiter (18:33) and Dakota Nelson (18:37).
Sofeia Eddy was second overall among the girls timing 21:55. Her teammates Erin Mahardy (27:28, 13th) and Gabby Huff (27:40, 14th) added season-best times. “The adrenaline of the day pushed our kids towards personal best times,” said S-E coach Anne Geary. “We had to change the course to last year's layout on Friday due to the heavy rain on Thursday. This didnt seem to dampen their enthusiasm. We were all pleased with the great weather and our overall races.”
The Marauders race again on Wednesday at Cooperstown.

DERUYTER – Otselic Valley (7-2) picked up one of its most impressive wins of the season dominating the second half in Friday’s shutout victory at DeRuyter.
After a scoreless first half, Brent Rasmussen, Dusty Davis, and Hunter Grace had goals for the Vikings. Dylan Comfort made six saves in goal for OV.
“It was like two separate games,” said Otselic Valley coach Dave Loomis. “They were able to control play in the first half. They didn’t get a lot of shots, but they were quicker to the ball and played well. In the second half, we shifted gears and took over. We were able to get a number of shots, and obviously put three in the net. It was a nice win for us, especially coming off a disappointing loss to McGraw.”
The Vikings play at George Jr. Republic today.

Nate Shackelton had the lone goal for UV in the first half depositing a shot into the net after a Brett Smith cross. Smith figured in the second-half goal as well when his cornerkick to Lane Allen was redirected to Garrett Mackey for the goal.
Kyle King made two saves for his second shutout of the season. Freshman defender Jared Hanslmaier was credited for his aggressive play by UV head coach Ryan Houck. “It was easily the best game (Jared) played this season,” Houck said.

Erin Gawronski won the 200-yard freestyle (2:12.36), two events later, Sara Loomis claimed the 50-yard freestyle (27.28), and Kerstin Franklin took the first event after diving claiming a number one in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.97).
Norwich added its final win in the meet-closing 400-yard freestyle relay.

Emily Bertram, Jessica Brooks, Jenny Yeager, and Shelby Stoppkotte had individual wins to go with teaming for a first in at least one relay. Brooks was the Trojans’ lone double individual event winner taking the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly.
“The time drops we’ve been getting the last couple of meets shows we’re getting the full benefit of the yardage we’re doing in practice,” said Greene coach Mike Platta.

Jordan Anderson, buoyed by a strong overall defensive effort, was able to preserve the shutout making eight saves.
“I think it was just our will to win this game,” said UV coach Janelle Ross. “They have some good players, and we had to do some fast marking.”
