First Baptist Church hosts convention this weekend
NORWICH – American Baptists from parishes throughout New York will participate in a convention and biennial meeting beginning Sunday, Oct. 10 and concluding Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the First Baptist Church, located on 10 Park Place.
This is the second time the Norwich church has hosted the celebration, the first being back in 1984 when approximately 800 attended. Interim pastor Rev. Jim Horton, secretary for this region of American Baptist Churches for New York, said he looked forward to the three-day celebration as “a time of worship and inspiration.” Horton has been at First Baptist Church since 2008.
The 2010 convention is titled, “A Faith for These Times,” and will offer themed scripture from Colossians 2:1-50. Participants will attend worship services, musical performances, council business meetings, communal meals, workshops and a host of family activities. Facilitated discussion groups, titled, “Can We Talk?,” are offered from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday.
The Rev. Betty Wright-Riggins, guest preacher and Bible study leader, kicks off the celebration with a traditional worship service and communion at 7 p.m. Sunday in the church’s sanctuary. The service is open to the public and to people of all faiths. Dinner is hosted by Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School and Keuka College.
Wright-Riggins will also lead a Bible study at 8 a.m. on Monday. Dr. Jerry Cain, president of Judson University, will lead a blended worship service that follows at 9:30 a.m. A business meeting and missional church presentation gets underway at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Glynis LaBarre from the American Baptist Home Mission Societies.
The Rev. Florence Li, also from the Mission Societies, leads a contemporary worship service at 2:30 p.m. International ministries missionary Madeline Flores-Lopez, from the Dominican Republic, will close the event Tuesday with a worship service at 8 a.m.
