Thrilling win for Cyclones' A team
UTICA – The Cyclones’ “A” team downed the previously undefeated Utica Bulldogs 27-19 in a hard-hitting battle of unbeaten teams last Sunday.
Tristan Rifanburg led the Cyclone offense with three touchdowns , a point-after conversion run, and 105 yards rushing. Matt Craig opened the game with a 68-yard TD run on the game’s first play from scrimmage, and rushed for 101 yards. John Marvin also rushed for big yardage.
The Cyclones led 18-6 at the half, and held off a furious charge by Utica’s elusive running back, Womack, who had touchdowns of 97 and 76 yards, and a fourth down 33-yard TD reception by game’s end.
Spencer Stone, Marvin and Craig led the hard-hitting, swarming Cyclones defense; Marvin had a key fumble recovery, and along with Killian Benedict, produced a safety. Carlos Ithier, Rifanburg, and Nick Murphy played big defense as well
The Cyclone “B” Team fell 19-13, to the quick Bulldogs, the fourth loss for the Cyclones by six points or less.
Dalen Geislinger rolled 47 yards to pay dirt on a fake punt in the second to put the score at 7-6 at the half. Jake Walsh scored on a 7-yard TD, with Geislinger adding the point-after run to knot the score at 13-13 in the fourth quarter.
The defense was led by Paden Burlison and Cole Rifanburg, who a key fumble recovery to stop a Bulldogs drive. Jakob Franklin, Michael Carson, Andrew Barry, and Brennan Slater contributed to the defensive effort.
The Cyclones’ “C” team remained undefeated stopping Utica, 19-0. Marcus Benjamin had a pair of TDs for the Cyclones, with Ryan Borden adding a five-yard TD run, and a conversion run.
On defense, Tim Thompson had an interception and some big hits; Ian Stone, Borden, Cameron Ivan, Carter Rudnitski, Owen Blackman, Alex Wehrli, and Tom Parrella all added to the strong defensive day.
The Cyclone “D” Team remained unblemished in a non-scoring game against the Bulldogs.
The Cyclones’ “B” team cheerleaders placed second in the Tri-Valley League Cheer Championship at the Utica Auditorium, and will compete in the state championships in Albany on Oct.. 16. The Cyclones’ D, C and A teams all placed well in the competition that involved over 1,000 cheerleaders.
The Cyclones are at home Sunday against archrival Oneida. The D team opens play at 9 a.m., the C team plays at 11 a.m., the B team at 1 p.m., and A team kicks off at 3 p.m.
