NORWICH – United States Congressman Michael Arcuri announced Thursday $80,000 in Housing Preservation grant moneys awarded to the city for repairs to 13 low or fixed income residences.
Through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the funding will “allow a number of low-income homeowners in Norwich make necessary repairs to their homes that they would not otherwise be able to make,” stated Arcuri, who added “improving safety and energy efficiency is not only good for the homeowners but the entire community as well.”
The USDA Rural Development funds will be utilized for emergency repairs to properties in need, said Norwich Mayor Joe Maiurano, including roof repairs; septic, water and heating upgrades; foundation, electrical and other structural work; the removal of lead based paint; and weatherization and handicap accessibility.
“It really is a great program and it allows us, in an emergency situation, to address any issues that may come up in a timely manner,” Maiurano said. “Sometimes these types of problems come up, and if a family doesn’t have the means to fix those problems, we now have the ability to step in and provide some much needed help.”
City residents’ overall income will ultimately determine the amount of money available for necessary repairs and the funds, up to $7,500 per household according to the USDA, will be at the city’s disposal as needed, reported the mayor.
Maiurano wished to thank Congressman Arcuri for his efforts in helping to procure the grant monies, and stated this is just one example of the many grants they city has applied for and received with his assistance.
“Congressman Arcuri is always aware of the needs of his constituents in upstate and central New York,” said the Mayor Maiurano. “He is constantly working to find solutions to our needs.”
