Boy Scouts celebrate centennial with Saturday expo

NORWICH – Over 250 Chenango County, Central New York and Pennsylvania scouts and scout leaders are expected to attend the 100-year celebration of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) this weekend at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.

According to Troop 62 Scoutmaster Cliff Ketchum, his scouts will be joined by fellow local Troop 63, in addition to scouting organizations from New Berlin, Greene, Afton, Sherburne, Kattelville, Harpursville and Troops 81 and 3030 from Pennsylvania.

The centennial celebration will feature a wide variety of informational demonstrations and displays and BSA Unit Commissioner Rick Mahannah said it’s a great opportunity for scouts throughout the district to “get together, meet other scouts they’ve never met before, make new friends and have some fun.”

Scoutmaster Ketchum noted that, while all scouts earn a variety of Merit Badges, some are harder to come by than others. As part of the 100 year celebration, he stated the Camporee Committee had identified a number of organizations and individuals whose abilities fall within a specific Merit Badge field.
