Boy Scouts celebrate centennial with Saturday expo
NORWICH – Over 250 Chenango County, Central New York and Pennsylvania scouts and scout leaders are expected to attend the 100-year celebration of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) this weekend at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
According to Troop 62 Scoutmaster Cliff Ketchum, his scouts will be joined by fellow local Troop 63, in addition to scouting organizations from New Berlin, Greene, Afton, Sherburne, Kattelville, Harpursville and Troops 81 and 3030 from Pennsylvania.
The centennial celebration will feature a wide variety of informational demonstrations and displays and BSA Unit Commissioner Rick Mahannah said it’s a great opportunity for scouts throughout the district to “get together, meet other scouts they’ve never met before, make new friends and have some fun.”
A primary focus of the celebration, however, is the BSA Merit Badge program.
Scoutmaster Ketchum noted that, while all scouts earn a variety of Merit Badges, some are harder to come by than others. As part of the 100 year celebration, he stated the Camporee Committee had identified a number of organizations and individuals whose abilities fall within a specific Merit Badge field.
Local organizations such as the New York State Police, Trout Unlimited, the SPCA, Smith-Ford, Every Dogs Dreams, Action Cyclery, the Finger Lakes Trail, Rogers Environmental Conservation Center and the Norwich Fire and Police Departments – in addition to a number of local individuals – will be on hand to display their expertise in their respective fields.
Merit Badges such as Land Surveying, Cycling, Automotive Maintenance, Aviation, Plumbing, Pets and Pet Care, Journalism and Fishing and Fly Tying will all be represented Saturday.
Scout skills demonstrations will include Dutch Oven cooking techniques, knot tying, geocaching, lumberjacking, scout games and more.
“The celebration of 100 years of boy scouting, the displays and the demonstrations will demonstrate to the public the many different activities which scouts are exposed to through the Merit Badge program,” said Mahannah. “Boy Scouts brings an opportunity for these kids to experience the outdoors in ways they might not otherwise, and scouts contribute to the community through community service and Eagle Scout projects.”
The Chenango District 100 Year Celebration Camporee will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. Admission for the event is free. For more information on the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge program visit www.meritbadge.com.
