Town closes Red Mill Road early after series of minor accidents

NORWICH – The Town of Norwich ordered the seasonal Red Mill Road to close half a month early Thursday, citing a high number of minor motor vehicle accidents in the past week.
Norwich Town Supervisor David Law said crews had responded to two separate minor accidents Wednesday night after already being called out “a number of times” in the past week.
“We’re closing it early due to reoccurring, dangerous icing,” said Law.
The relatively short road is about a sixth of a mile long and located down a steep incline in an often shaded area.
Law said the road’s steep, curving decent and lower temperatures were creating a hazard that even cautious drivers might not be able to avoid.
He noted the town began sanding the road earlier this month before deciding to close it yesterday. “Even the sander was having a hard time going up the hill,” he said.
The town typically closes Red Mill Road from November to May, said Law.
