Greene reaches finals of own tournament

GREENE – Facing another perennial field hockey power in Section IV, Greene was able to advance to the finals of its own tournament scoring twice in the second half to beat the Olympians.
Jahna Driscoll tallied her 27th goal of the season at the 19-minute mark, and Abbey Wentlent added insurance at 6:46. Marathon broke up the shutout scoring with 1:30 left.
“I thought we played very well, we just couldn’t seem to get the shots off, and they had their defense packed in,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “We had to make some adjustments at halftime, and we definitely did that.”
Carlin also praised her defense, and added that senior forward Andrea Day had probably her best game of the defense. “We had so many kids have many, many shining moments,” Carlin said. “When they had to come up with the plays, they did.”
Greene plays Whitney Point Saturday in the finals at 7 p.m. Whitney Point advanced with a 2-0 win over Maine-Endwell.

SHERBURNE – After Sherburne-Earlville tied the game, Canastota pulled away with three unanswered goals Thursday.
Jessica Patterelli had two goals for the Raiders, the first one five minutes into the game. S-E tied the game just over two minutes later when Maggie Burlison found the cage after receiving a pass from Megan Viera.
“The score doesn’t show it, but I felt we played very well,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “They’re a very athetic team that was able to finish. That was the bottom line.”

COPES CORNERS – Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton avenged an early-season loss to Franklin, and put itself in position to compete in the Section IV, Class D tournament later this month.
“I said before the game that in order to go on, we had to win this game,” said G-MU coach Kristen Bradbury. “Overall, the entire game we played awesome, and the passing was unbelievable.”
The Raiders scored twice in the opening half, each goal scored by Lauren Hill. Hill tallied unassisted at 21:40, then picked up an assist from Miranda Hill at 7:32 for the next goal. Miranda Hill scored the lone goal of the second half.
“The last time we played (Franklin) was one of our best games,” Bradbury said. “I was glad we were able to match up with them again, and play the way I know we can play.”
G-MU finishes the regular season with a 7-6-2 record.

ONEONTA – Norwich matched the highest win total in head coach Bob Branham’s tenure beating Oneonta by one stroke at Oneonta Country Club Thursday.
Senior Frankie Somich started with two double bogeys, but played 1-under-par golf the rest of the way to shoot a 39 to lead Norwich and earn a spot in next spring’s Section IV medalist tournament.
Eric Walling had a 40, Jacob Kelly shot 41, Ryan Hagen carded a 44, and Corey Johnson added a 49. “It’s been a great year, and we’re pleased to have three kids going to the medalist tournament,” Branham said. “We looked forward to STACs on Tuesday, and hope to do well there.”
Norwich completes its season when it travels to Horseheads to play at Willow Creek Golf Club.

Ben Gifford and Carson King had a pair of goals for Delhi. Gifford also had two assists.
