New director for Greene Chamber of Commerce

GREENE – Grace Benkovitz has been named executive director of the Greater Greene Chamber of Commerce.
The organization, which counts 180 businesses and individuals in the Greene area as members, has been without a permanent director since June, when Stefanie Hartman stepped down due to health reasons. Ruthie Koertz and Ellen Adams have been filling in as co-executive directors on an interim basis since Hartman resigned. They will continue to work closely with Benkovitz to ensure a smooth transition.
The Guilford native is a 1992 graduate of Bainbridge-Guilford, and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Industry as well as a Masters in Nutrition. Her career path has taken her from producing large music festivals to working in investment banking and, most recently, to setting out on her own as a nutritionist and nutrition writer.
Benkovitz recently relocated back to Chenango County after spending the last 13 years living and working in New York City. She said she had been looking for an opportunity to return to her rural roots when she stumbled upon the listing for the part time chamber position.
“It coincided perfectly with my move,” she said, explaining that with her event experience and administrative skills she felt she had the “perfect background” to be successful in the position.
“I was very impressed with her resume,” reported Adams.
Benkovitz was one of five candidates for the position. GGCC President Marcel Barrows said her personality as well as her professional background made her stand out.
“I think that Grace is a people person,” Barrows said. “We really need that to get along with so many interests in town.”
Benkovitz is still getting acclimated to her new position, but is already enthusiastic about the job ahead of her.
“Greene is such a lovely place to promote,” she explained. “It’s just such a wonderful town.”
She has already begun working on her first project, coordinating Greene’s Hometown Holiday Weekend. Held annually on the first weekend in December, this year’s event will kick off on Friday, Dec. 3 with caroling, the Christmas tree lighting, a bike give-a-way and plenty of hot cocoa. The night will conclude with a choral celebration at Zion Church. The festivities will continue on Saturday with Breakfast with Santa at the Congregational Church, activities at Moore Memorial Library and horse and wagon rides. Additional events are being planned for Sunday as well, Benkovitz said.
In addition to a new executive director, GGCC also has new office space. They recently reached an agreement with the village to establish an office at Village Hall, 49 Genesee St.
