NORWICH – On senior recognition night, the Tornado brought home their first win of the season in a shutout victory over winless Afton Monday night.
Ryan Tomanocy was credited with NHS’s first goal after a scramble in front of the goal and a failed clear attempt by the Crimson Knights’ defense. David Jones connected on a shot from 20 yards out, and Cameron Prime converted a penalty kick for the three-goal halftime lead.
“It was a case where we figured out how to pass the ball, and we passed it well most of the game,” said Norwich coach John McCumiskey. “This was a good way for the seniors to go out. It’s been a difficult journey for them.”
Kieran Coffey had the lone goal of the second half when he cleaned up a deflection off the Afton defense midway through the period.

Stewart-Loomis repeat as doubles champs
OWEGO – Norwich juniors Sophie Stewart and Bryn Loomis rallied in the third set against Chenango Valley’s number one doubles team of Lauren Eggleston and Olivia Hewison to win a second straight Class B doubles championship Monday night.
Stewart and Loomis took the first set, 6-2, but dropped the second 6-2. The CV duo led 4-2 in the third, and had a match point at 5-4 that was saved by the Norwich team. Stewart and Loomis went on to win the final set, 7-5.
“They’re both very excited,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “They played a little tenative in the second set and came unwound. They just showed their toughness coming back in the third set.”
The tournament was also a success from a team standpoint as Norwich finished second overall in Class B, and one point ahead of Susquehanna Valley. SV beat Norwich twice in the regular season to claim the STAC Central Division title. “From a coach’s standpoint, beating Sus Valley by one is almost as sweet as winning the B doubles,” Stewart said.
At singles, Reva Seager helped the Norwich cause winning her second-round match to advance to the quarterfinals. Seager needed three sets against Seton Catholic Central’s Terralyn Corino, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in a match that took 2 1/2 hours to complete. “Reva played her best tennis of the season to gut out the third-set win,” Stewart said.
Also competing in the sectional tournament was Jessica Lerner, who lost to top-seeded Christina Perry of Seton in straight sets, and the sister team of Katie and Kristi Orioli, who dropped their second-round doubles match. Katie Orioli, a senior, finishes her varsity doubles career with a 27-6 record, Stewart said.
Norwich will compete in the Section IV State Qualifier a week from Friday at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
