BIG FLATS – At the STAC Championships Tuesday, Central Division champion Norwich tied for third to cap one of the best seasons for the Tornado linksters in 15 seasons.
Norwich’s five-person score of 429 tied East Division champion Windsor, and was 10 shots behind co-champions Vestal and Horseheads.
“I was very pleased, and we hung in there with Vestal and Horseheads on a course we have no knowledge of,” said Norwich coach Bob Branham. “We felt good about our scores.”
Overall, 67 golfers participated in the tournament with senior Jacob Kelly tying for 10th shooting a 9-over-par 81. Senior Frank Somich tied for 13th with an 82. Next was Eric Walling at 83, Kyle Cashman shot a 91, while Corey Johnson and Ryan Hagen each had 92s.
Kelly, Walling, and Somich all earned spots in the spring 2011 Section IV medalist tournament, and as a team, Norwich won 12 of its final 13 matches, matched a team-record with 13 wins – including a perfect 9-0 record at home – and added the aforementioned division title. “It was an impressive season,” Branham said, “and it was nice to see all six players’ scores count today.”

Greene 4, Vestal 1
GREENE – Greene moved one win from completing an unbeaten regular season beating Vestal for the second time this season on Tuesday night.
Andrea Day had her second hat trick of the season, and scored the first goal at 16:44. Day had the opening goal in extended play after a penalty corner. A short while later, Emily Gascon made it 2-0. Jahna Driscoll sent a pass up to Day, who fired a pass to Gascon in the middle. Gascon one-timed a hard shot into the cage.
Day scored on a near replica of Gascon’s goal in the second half. This time Gascon sent the hard crossing pass that Day tipped into the right side of the goal. “We had some unbelievable goals with great passing,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “I thought we played well and everyone had a chance to play and make great plays for us.”

The Trojans had plenty of offense in the first half, yet scored just one goal. “We had a lot of opportunities, but we hit the crossbar, we just missed left or right, and their keeper made some good saves,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “We talked about those misses, and we put it together and made some nice combinations in the second half.”
Five different players accounted for Greene’s goals. Nate Patrick had one goal and one assist, and senior Brock Kinney tallied for the Trojans (11-4). “It was nice to spread it around, plus a couple of guys like Brock scored. It was good to have,” Tallman said.

Greene 90, Windsor 89
WINDSOR – Greene came from nine points down with three events left, swept those three events, and eked out a one-point win over Windsor Tuesday.
The Trojans (7-5) finished the season winning its final five meets, and the one last night was as close as it gets. “We were actually losing by 16 after diving, and I pulled the girls together and gave my best Knute Rockne speech,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “It was senior night for (Windsor), and I think we were prepared, but were not ready for their level of intensity at the start of the meet.”
Greene beat the Black Knights by 30 points in the first meeting, and with that knowledge, Platta re-worked his normal starting lineup. After falling behind early, Platta made lineup adjustments on the fly.
At the end, Jessica Brooks won the 100-yard backstroke by two seconds, Shelby Stoppkotte won the 100-yard breaststroke by a mere 66-hundreths of a second, and the meet-closing 400-yard freestyle relay of Jenny Yeager, Deanna Bay, Moriah McCauley, and Chelsea Carlson won easily. Greene also needed a third-place finish in the relay and big fifth-place finishes in the backstroke and breaststroke to earn enough points for the victory.
“It was the breaststroke that really gave me chest pains,” Platta said. “They were neck and neck. Shelby just made a phenomenal final turn.”
Brooks also won the 100-yard butterfly, and Yeager added wins in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle.
Greene is idle until the Class C sectional preliminaries on Nov. 3 in Lansing.
