Norwich duo wins Section 4 title

Girls’ Tennis

BINGHAMTON – Norwich juniors Bryn Loomis and Sophie Stewart took one step farther than last season, and were crowned Section IV doubles champions Saturday at Binghamton Tennis Center in the state qualifier.
Runners-up last year losing in three sets in the finals, Loomis and Stewart did not lose a set in three matches over the two-day tournament beating Union-Endicott’s Danielle Babcock and Kassandra Hizny, 6-3, 6-2 for the title.
“We were the only intact doubles team coming back this year, and we felt we were the favorites going in,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “We proved to be the team to beat.”
Norwich beat five of the six teams in the doubles tournament over the course of the season, and dropped just one set in the postseason. To reach the finals, the NHS duo defeated Horseheads’ Julia Weaver and Elena DeLuccia, 6-2, 6-1, then faced a stern test from Vestal’s combo winning 7-5, 6-4.
“I think we elevated the game of everybody we played – everyone played their best against us,” Stewart said. “Horseheads and Vestal were tough matches. Our girls just played some incredible tennis. Our baseline game was absolutely on, and we hit crisp, clean shots to set the net play up.”
Norwich’s team has just one loss to Section IV competition over the past two years, and hopes to win at least one match in the New York State tournament this Saturday at the East Side Racket Club in Syracuse.
“Our goals at the start of the season were to win the B’s, come back and win the state qualifier, and go to states and get at least one win,” Stewart said. “We’ve accomplished two of the three goals, and I think the third one is realistic and not high-handed at all. The unfamiliarity of being there (at states) is out of us, so we should feel more comfortable.”

G-MU 2, Charlotte Valley 1
DAVENPORT – Over the past several years, G-MU had not earned a postseason spot much less win a playoff game.
Saturday, the Raiders knocked off their second higher seeded opponent eliminating number two seed Charlotte Valley. After scoring the go-ahead goal with just under 12 minutes left in the game, the Raiders survived some Charlotte Valley pressure that resulted in two shots that hit the crossbar and sidepost.
“Our last two games of the regular season, we started to play consistently through the entire game,” said G-MU coach Kristen Bradbury. “In the playoffs, we’ve just picked it up from there.”
Tanya Barnes came up from her stopper position on defense to net the game-winner. After a cornerkick, the ball was bobbled by the CV goalie in front of the net, and Barnes ran through it to score her team’s second tally.
CV took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Sarah Haight scored on a direct kick with just 22 seconds left.
Just over 3 1/2 minutes into the second half, G-MU scored the equalizer. Kali Murphy sent a cross from the right to the middle that Miranda Hill touched in.
“The girls are pretty psyched and the fans are too,” Bradbury said. “I’m so proud of them. They’ve fought through the season. It’s pretty sweet.”

Greene 3, Odessa-Montour 2 OT
ODESSA – Greene made the long bus ride out to Odessa-Montour worth its while, and validated its number 11 ranking in the latest New York State Class C poll beating the host Indians in overtime Saturday.
Rebecca Smith scored the go-ahead goal for the Trojans (13-3-1) at the end of the first overtime to make it 2-1. Smith took the ball off the opening kickoff in the second 10-minute extra period, and scored her third goal of the game just 12 seconds in.
Greene survived Odessa-Montour’s pressure giving up a single goal in the last 10 minutes to prevail. “In the second half, Odessa-Montour really turned it up and put on a lot of pressure, but our defense was able to stay strong,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone. “We want to go as far as we can in the playoffs. We knew (O-M) had a good team, but we also knew we had a good chance of winning.”
Smith put the Trojans on the board in the opening half just 22 seconds into the game. After an Odessa-Montour turnover, she weaved through the defense and scored unassisted. “She’ll go hard after any ball, and her speed came in very handy (Saturday),” Stone said of Smith.
The Trojans will meet top-seeded Elmira Notre in a tournament semifinals game on Wednesday.
