McDonough to decide whether to extend terms of office

McDONOUGH – McDonough residents will not only be casting their votes for the county, state and national candidates of their choice when they head to the polls tomorrow: They will also be deciding whether to extend the terms of office for three of the town’s elected positions.
Residents will have the chance of voting yes or no on a proposition to appear on the back of the ballot form. The proposition proposes the adoption of Local Law No. 2 for the year 2010, which would extend the terms of office of the town’s supervisor, highway superintendent and clerk from two to four years.
If approved by voters tomorrow, the new law would supersede the existing provisions of Section 24 of town law.
“The first year, you’re just getting organized. The second year, you’re getting priorities in line, and the latter half of the second year, you have to campaign all over again,” said McDonough Town Supervisor Arrington Canor, on the need to amend the town’s current law pertaining to the terms of office for the positions in question.
By extending the term of office, Canor said, officials can “focus (their) ideas on just town business, not waste time on others.”
“It is not uncommon to have elected officials in office for six years or more. That’s three 2-year terms,” he added. Canor himself began his third 2-year term as town supervisor on Jan. 1, after a successful bid for re-election last November. Town Clerk Donna Preston and Highway Superintendent were also re-elected last year. None of the three faced opposition in the most recent election.
At least one of their constituents, however, has spoken out in opposition to the adoption of Local Law No. 2.
In a letter to the editor which appeared in the Oct. 28 edition of The Evening Sun, Karol Proppe of McDonough voiced her opinion on the topic. She said she intends to vote ‘no’ on the proposition, and encouraged others to do the same.
“If they are doing a good job, they needn’t worry. They will be re-elected as many have in the past,” she said, referring to the three elected positions. “On the other hand, if they are hurting our town, they need to be gone in two years, not four.”
Polls are open tomorrow from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the McDonough Town Hall, 1178 County Rd. 5.
